To be human is to be a person created in the image and likeness of God.

The dating game: My parents, Marzena and Robert, met for the first time in the mountains on April 10th, 1981. They both went there with their group of friends as a trip. My mom was with her best friend Ela, and my dad with with Krzysztof. A few months before my dad and his friend had been dating girls named Marzena and Ela as well, but it didn't work out, therefore this time they decided to switch. My dad attempted to charming her by staring at her. He got her attention and they fell for each other. | Proposal: The proposal was very simple. My dad went over to my mom's house, first asked for my grandmothers permission, then my mom. | Wedding: They got married on July 21st, 1984, three years after they met. The wedding was in church Dziecka Jesus (Baby Jesus). It was a small wedding, only about 70 people.

Honeymoon: For the honeymoon they went to Budapest, Hungary for a week or two. They had an interesting first experience with hot peppers; After painfully finding out that they are cooking with some VERY hot peppers, they did not realize the juices stayed on their hands. My mom touched her eye, while my dad went to the bathroom to pee... | My dad fighting for Poland during WWII, while my older brother was 1 year old. | My mom is the most beautiful mom of all. | My parents got a divorce on July 2006, after 22 years of marriage.

 I was born on September 16th, 1996 At 12:15 pm I weighed 3.980 kg I was 59 cm

It was a very dangerous pregnancy. My mom had two serious bleedings and the doctor said I was gone for sure, but an USG determined that I'm still hanging on. My mom often prayed for me to be a healthy happy baby. Fortunately everything ended well, and my mom delivered me 7 days late. The birth was very long. At the beginning the contractions were so far apart and so light that my mom just layed in the hospital reading a book, relaxed for 24 hours. Then a doctor gave her medicine to speed it up and I was born 2 hours later. | I was a fat baby, the biggest born in the hospital that week. My mom says I was the most beautiful baby. All the nurses, doctors, and other mothers agreed. I had soft, smooth, pretty skin that was not wrinkly according to my mom.

He was 11 years old at the time and he was very happy and excited to finally have a little sister to love and take care of, so my parents let him chose my name. He decided that my first name will be Anna, because that was the first love of his life, and Lena for my middle name, as that was his second love. If i was a boy i would have been named Adam or Mikolaj. | *Ania is a polish short, 'cute' form for Anna | Picture of me and my brother on a summmer vacation in Venice

I was baptised at 3 months in Saint Hiacynt Church. There was quite a bit of trouble with the godparents. My godfather died unexpectedly days before my baptism, and my godmother, Ela Trelinska, called us at church to tell us she's sick at the hospital and wont come either. Therefore my mom had to get her atheist sister to be a representative for Ela. So now we're actually not sure who my godparents are. | My Baptism

Always eating. | I find that I haven't changed one bit since i was a little kid...

I've always loved playing with people's hair and doing their makeup. I've always loved animals. | ..And dressing up of course.

My very first word was "nie", which means "no". The first time I said nie was at 3 months old, and it was a very clear, obvious nie. My parents liked to make fun of me by asking me | NIE! | First words | First steps I could first walk when I was 10 months old. Whenever I got hurt or fell I wouldn't scream but simply get up. Then my mom would want to hug and comfort me, but I said everything is okay and nothing happened. | random questions like "will you ever do drugs?", "will you be a bad daughter?", to which i always answered "nie". the second word i said was mama, then tata (dad), later baba and so on.

My first memory, in Italy. | My very first memory is of the second time i was taken to Italy for summer vacation. I remember it only as two very vague images, as if from a dream. one is strangely a birds view of the blue hotel, with a pool behind it, and a beach right next to it. the second image is of a living room and kitchen with blue floor tiles, where my parents are trying to have a siesta on the couch, and me insisting for them to go play with me. When i told my mom that i remember these two random images I though they were from a dream, but she told me that they're from Italy and my descriptions matched hers exactly. It was that time in Italy that we also discovered the "tire noodles" that I deeply fell in love with for years.

I loved kid bungee. Once I literally spent the whole day jumping and spent over a $100. I had a big insecurity about my short hair due to a traumatic experience in kindergarten, therefore I liked to wear wigs or stockings on my head pretending they're braids (even in public). And of course I loved food. I ate an entire chicken all by myself when i was 6 or 5 years old.

My first pictures were at 5 months old with raspberry juice. I would dip my hands in the juice and smear it on the paper. My very first painting picture was at 1 years old. When I got older I also enjoyed making sculptures and other crafts. There were many art contests at my school, and at each one i won at least 3rd place. | I won a singing contest.

Lately I have developed a great passion for cooking. I've made maple syrup salmon, tiramisu, zapiekanka, szaszlyk, molden chocolate lava cake, stuffed peppers, stuffed muffins, mousakka, various salads, veggies, pasta and other simple dishes.

To be human is to be a person in relationship with others and to live in community.

My first day of school It wasn't very special because in Poland you keep the same class through out all of kindergarten and elementary. The only teacher I can remember is my Polish teacher Mrs. Barbara.

MY FIRST COMMUNION | My first communion was organized by our school in our own private church The priest was father Wladyslaw. As a celebration had a dinner in a restaurant with all of my family, even my great great aunt flew from Canada.

Moving to Canada | Pictures from our first week in Canada. | We moved to Canada about 2 years after my mom divorced my dad. It first came up when she married a man that lived in Canada and we had the choice to either move there or stay in Poland. We saw Canada as a great opportunity for my brother, for my development and a better life. I was also very keen to move because I love change and it seemed like an exciting adventure. We made the decision to move to Ottawa, Canada because my ex-stepdad lived there. The first 4 months we lived in his small, one-person apartment. I had to share the living room with my brother and sleep on boxes. I went to Dr FJ Macdonald school, but I really don't remember anything because I didn't speak any English so to me it basically felt like watching a movie in Chinese. We later moved to Barrhaven and I went to MPB, but I unfortunately don't remember very much either.

I got my first, long wanted cat, Bzyk, when I was 8 years old for Christmas. Under the tree I found an envelope with a picture of three baby kittens and a note under saying i can pick one. We visited the kittens once, and I held them all; they were my moms hand size. After we put them back to their mother, only my cat tired to climb out of the bed to come to me. He failed and kept falling over but he tried hard. I chose him because i though that if i didn't, he would get thrown out to the streets because hes black and gives bad luck, so I felt bad for him. Now he is my giant, little devil that iI love to death. | I got my second cat in Canada. One day my mom was going shopping and I asked her to get me an IcedCapp from Timmy's on her way. She came home holding something under her coat and said "here is your IcedCapp" and took out a white baby kitten. We named him IcedCapp. Unfortunately we had to give him away a year or two later because Bzyk hated him.

The Friends Throughout My Life | The very best friend I have ever had in my entire life was Karolina. I met her when i was 3 years old and we parted only when I moved to canada. We ever only fought once, and it was over a stick that we found in the playground that we both wanted. My mom told me that when I was little i admitted to her that i love Karolina and that i even think of her as soon as i wake up in the morning. I really miss Karolina, but unfortunately we drifted apart when I moved here. I will never forget her, nor find someone I will love as much as Karolina. Although my current best friend that I love and find similar to her is Stephanie Ortiz.

In Poland you keep the same class through out the whole school. Since my elementary school had a kindergarten as well, I knew the people in my class since i was about 4 years old. So obviously they became my good friends. | Camilla was my very first friend when I came to Canada. I met her in a Polish, Saturday school. I remember well, the second i walked in she started waving at me and yelled for me to sit next to her. I don't know why she was so friendly and happy to be friends with me but I'm very grateful to have her as a friend. | I met Victoria at a summer camp, Muskokawoods. She was my cabin counselor. I was at a bad place emotionally when I went to that camp but Victoria helped me so much and I really don't know where I would be right now if I haven't met her. When I went to that camp I was a very quiet, sad, insecure, lonely girl, but I left with so much more hope, confidence, happiness, closeness to God and love for myself. The real turning point was when one night I basically had a mental breakdown and she and the girls in my cabin cared enough about a complete stranger to take their time to help me get better. I remember that night I could not stop crying and Victoria just sat with me and hugged me like nobody did for a long time. Her hug ment so much to me because at home my friends were my bullies and i felt so lonely and uncared about.

I met my first love, Daniel Witkowski, on a summer vacation. I was 5 or 6 years old. We met on a big, red bench-swing. He said to my mom i was the first girl he ever liked because all the other girls are stupid but im different. It lasted about 2 years long distance. We sent each other few letters and met on summers and once on new years. I even have one letter in which i wanted to say i love you but i never got the guts to send it. | Me & Marcin 2 years | Me & Nathan almost 2 years | Me & Kevin 4 months ~

To be human is to be essentially good, despite the capacity for disorder and sin.

May 31, 2012 This morning I heard on the radio about some cruel murder, I didn't think much of it because I have been desensitized to the cruelty between people. But then I heard that the man sent part of the body parts to the Canadian government, now that was shocking. I couldn't believe my ears so I went online and researched it. I read the news report with extreme shock; I could not understand how cruel, sick and insane someone could be. As I kept reading I came across information about how he posted videos or killing cute little baby kittens... I lost it. I do not understand how the hell someone could do that! We are all brothers and sisters, were all a family! How can someone so brutally rape, mutilate, and kill someone!? I’m a wreck, so traumatized. June 3, 2012 when my boyfriend came over today we began talking about the 'Canadian psycho'. I found myself deeply interested in it but he could not stand to hear about this cruelty and asked me to end the conversation. Later, as he was about to leave I realized how much this case affected me in my life because I didn’t want him to leave, I feared the world. I felt panic that the killer could be right outside waiting for his next pray,

end even if not there are so many other psychos in this world. It took him 30minutes to convince me to let him go but I made sure he would text me as soon as he got home. When he left I was so scared for him as well as my family, friends and myself. I went to my room and jumped under the blankets panicking at every noise I heard. Fortunately no one was hurt. June 4, 2012 I had nightmares last night of the Canadian psycho killing all of my family and friends. Now I’m just thinking of how the victim’s family must feel... It's been such a gloomy week I cannot stop thinking about this inhuman cruelty June 7, 2012 Fortunately I saw n the news today that the killer was caught in Germany. I'm so glad that the person that recognized him had the guts and intelligence to call the police. I feel a little bit relieved but there is so much cruelty in the world... I have to stop things like this from happening again... Maybe I will become a psychologist and help anyone before they go over the edge... Meanwhile I’ll try to be nice and helpful and protect the ones close to me.

To be human is to live in a culture of shared beliefs, values and meanings & To be human is to live in a culture with specific symbols and rituals that help us understand God, the world and ourselves.

Dovile, Stephanie, Kevin, Brandon, My mom | Candle, Painting of God, Hands holding the sun, A heart | Makeup, Laptop, Psychology symbol, Special Effects Makeup | Polish flag, Painting palette, Check mark, Hands of a family forming a heart | In my coat of arms there are (in order):

I put pictures of my closest friends and my mother because those are the most important people in my life right now. The candle represents my beliefs about God, that he is all that's good, love, warmth and light. The picture of God simply says that I very much believe there is a God or a higher power out there. The hands holding a sun represent that I'm more spiritual than Religious. I believe in and love God, but I don't follow the church or any religion. The heart just means that I value love in my life very much. The next row and the palette are my biggest hobbies and interests. The girl applying lipstick represents that I love makeup and treat it more as art rather than a mask for your insecurities. The laptop is a symbol for my love for creating movies, computer drawings, photoshoping, the Internet and other tech-y things. The psychology symbol just means that I enjoy psychology and studying the behaviors of people. The last picture in the row is of a woman with fake scars on her face, this shows that i have a talent for and enjoy creating special effects with makeup. The painting palette obviously means that I love art and crafting. The white and red flag with an eagle represents that I'm polish and very proud. The check mark is simply that my motto in life is to do good, be happy, and strive for my best. The hands of a family forming a heart represents that i value love and family a lot.

To be human is to live in a culture where religion plays an essential role in how we look at and live in the world.

I grew up in a Catholic religious family. It was especially my dad and definitely his mother. She would make sure I pray every night and go to church every Sunday and read the Bible to me. Poland is a very strictly religious country, unlike Canada which i find a bit more spiritual. I was baptized of course, had my first communion and reconciliation. When I still lived in Poland, I attended a catholic elementary school and kindergarten that had its own church, priest and nuns. Although, as I moved to here I slowly drifted apart from the church. Since we didn't know any English we had to go to a polish church that was an hour away from our house so we always seemed to find an excuse to not go. A few years later my mom started becoming friends with many Muslims and learned a lot about the religion through them. My mom found it fascinating so she did a lot of research on religions and taught me a lot as well. We had many serious and insightful conversations.

Not too long ago my mom actually converted to Islam, and I stopped following any religion. My mom made a lot of good points about catholicism, like that they changed the 10 commandments to make money, they discriminate, aren't accommodating to the modern ways, are hypocritical, therefore i started doubting it. After lot thinking I came to the decision that I definitely believe in God but i disagree and don't follow any church or religion. Religions were created by humans to make money and war, but there only is one God. All religions have the same idea that God is good and we should follow his example, so that is how I participate in my religion. I try to pray often and think of God and thank him for what I have. I try to appreciate all the good things i have been blessed with, and ask for support with thinks I don't understand. I also like to try to see God in my everyday life so that I never lose my faith.

To be in a culture is to recognize that we form our relationship with God within culture.

I make a covenant with God to improve my attitude and relationships with the people in my life by: Appreciating all the little, beautiful things in my life. I'll stop to smell the flowers and trying to always be as positive as I can be. I will try to spread all my happiness to every person I come across, and put a smile on each face I see. I'll try to be more uplifting and helpful to everyone that needs me.

I'll try to be more uplifting and helpful to everyone that needs me. I will learn to keep my cool better and not blow up if somebody angers me. I will stay calm and happy and solve the problem better. I'll always stay polite, even to my enemies. I'll bring back the childish innocence, carelessness and happiness that I used to be full of and become a little ball of sunshine that will brighten everybody's day.

To be a Catholic in culture is to commit oneself to the kingdom of God proclaimed by and personified in Jesus.

The good cheerleader A ginger girl was walking down the hallway in her high school, when she was picked on by her 'friends'. They made fun of her, pulled her hair, pushed her and left her sitting on the ground crying. A teacher from the class across saw the crying girl but ignored her and continued doing work on her computer. Also a boy from her math class she sometimes talked to passed by her without even looking at her. But this one girl that was one of the popular cheerleaders walked up to

her; and when she saw her, she felt sadness and pity. She sat down next to her and asked her what happened. She fixed her orange hair and helped her put herself together. When the ginger girl stopped crying she talked with her about the bullies and comforted her. She sat with her until she was happy and smiling again. The next day she walked up to her to chat for a bit. Soon they were joined by this shy girl that was invited by the cheerleader. She introduced them, hoping that they will become friends and the ginger girl wouldn't have to deal with her bully friends again. They clicked right away and walked away talking and laughing.

To be Catholic in culture is to manifest in creation and human society God’s goodness and generosity. You are the salt of the earth, light of the world.

I learned very much in this Religion class. Many of the things I apply to my life every day now. First of all when as we were learning that to be human is to be a person created in the image and likeness of god, I learned a lot about myself and the people that surround me. We talked about how every human is equal and every life is precious. That unit really made me think about the value of my life and that I should appreciate it more, as well as see the beauty in others. Ever since then I’ve tried really hard to be more uplifting and put a smile of the face of everyone that I see. I also made a promise to myself to thank God for every opportunity and blessing in my life.

Learning about relationships in a person’s life helped me finally understand all the flaws in my relationships, as well as how to improve them. When we had to answer the 10 questions in the textbook about the relationships in our life it was really the first time I thought deeply about the people in my life and how I can get closer to them and make our relationship stronger. It was also easier to understand what love I feel for my friends and family after learning about the different types of love. We also learned about that humans are capable of sin but choose to be good. Learning about this reminded me and made me notice all the good in this world.

I especially see this in my mother and my best friend. They both have nothing to give but love and are so pure and good. They would never hurt anyone, all they do is put smiles on their faces. Seeing them makes me want to follow their example. Learning about cultures, shared beliefs and values made me really think about how the media influences us. I never really realized how much my friends and environment form me. It’s my goal to live my life the way I truly want to and to be happy and I will be able to accomplish this by not letting the media and outside opinions influence me.

Creating the drawing with symbols of meaningful things in our life really brought back many memories and made me create my very own memory box. I put there objects that have a lot of sentimental value to make sure that I never forget the little things in life that are the most important. Lastly this course made me realize how god is such a big part of my life.
