FC: Rwandan Genocide | "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow." Braden, Scott, Rob, Cody

The Hutu and Tutsi People were involved in the Genocide. The Hutu people doing the killing, and the Tutsi people were their victims

The Genocide took place in two bordering countries, Rwanda and Burundi. Both countries were populated by many Hutu and Tutsi people. The presidents of both countries were Hutus. | s

. | When Rwanda was of Belgian rule the Tutsis were considered superior to the Hutus. The Hutus became very frustrated with the inequality of the two groups and on Wednesday, April 6, 1994 the friction between the two groups came to a head.

This massacre started on April 6th, 1994. The brutal attacks on the Tutsi lasted for 100 days. | United Nations Peacekeepers had been there for 8 months before the fighting broke out, but refused to do anything, and were evacuated as the genocide progressed. | On April 6, the two presidents of Rwanda and Burundi were coming home from a political conference that was held in Tanzania. As the plane neared the Rwandan airport it was suddenly shot down by missiles fired from a high piece of ground.

F | No one knows exactly who shot down the president but there are two main theories. Some believe that the Tutsi group shot down the president because he was a Hutu and they wanted to kill all of the Hutus but this is not likely. | The second theory is that the Hutus shot down their own president so that they could start the mass killing of the Tutsis without the presidents consent.

Europeans and visitors were evacuated as soon as possible The Tutsis were recognized by identification cards. | Within hours soldiers were setting up roadblocks and capturing people off of the streets. The killing started within days.

Propaganda was used by the Hutu government to create fear. They described the Tutsi as evil and called them cockroaches. The Hutu people were told to use whatever weapons they could find to hack apart the Tutsis.

The Hutu people resorted to genocide because of the inequality between the two and the facts that they were led to believe. The Hutu people wee told that the Tutsi were actually planning a massacre against them and that in order for this to not happen they needed to wipe the Tutsis out. Not all Hutus were involved in the killing though. Some even helped the Tutsis to escape the country.

As the massacre went on it was fed through televisions, radios, newspapers and magazines across the world. Aid came immediately . Organizations such as the International Red Crass and Oxfam were sending supplies to everyone in the country. Finally in autumn of 1994 some form of order was restored. About 800 000 Tutsis returned from exile and reclaimed the land that had been taken from them. | Anyone suspected of killing was tried in court and sent to prison.
