FC: Evolution, Me& Other Freaks of Nature By: Robin Brande
This journal is dedicated to Ms. Shepherd and Casey Connor, the two people who helped me through my freshman year.
"I just hoped my first day of school-of high school, thank you, which I've only been looking forward to my entire life-might turn out to be at least slightly better than eating live bugs." The first day was horrible. There aren't even words to explain it. All the gossiping that went on the first day. Bethany and Teresa were the worst. I guess writing that letter wasn't such a good idea after all. | Day 1
 And the gossip continues.
Oh boy! They're back in action. I heard Teresa and Bethany talking about a meeting at Bethany's house tomorrow night. | Now into Science class. I get to see Casey again. I wonder about him. He has a British accent half the time and a normal one the other half. Doesn't that seem strange? We're observing our potatoes today. Casey really wants that special prize, I couldn't care less.
They're meeting at Bethany's house tomorrow. I wonder what's in store. I heard Bethany say "meet at my house tomorrow"(27). | "Casey brought a whole bag of stuff from home today..."(29) a few of which included calipers which can apparently be considered a weapon, a Crayola mega box, and a paint-chip color chart. The only thing I brought was my fuzzy notebook. Casey told me about Ms. Shepherd's blog. He's been reading it for three years. Teresa slammed me into a desk at the end of class. Casey decided to name her Miss Q-tip. He really can make me laugh
when I'm not having a good day.
We won!! Ha! Teresa can take that!! I bet that was quite the slap in the face for her. Our prize wasn't that great...an stuffed Jackalope... Homework | tonight is to write a paper about the Jackalope. Good thing Casey told me the Jackalope is a mythical creature or I would have spent all night trying to find facts about it with no luck. That sucks for Teresa and Bethany and Adam. Ms. Q-tip called Casey gay. I tried to stand up for him but what was I supposed to say?? I truthfully don't know if he's gay or not...that's kinda sad. I didn't want to tell Teresa he wasn't gay then end up having him be gay. That
look really bad on my part. So I did the only thing I could do. "I turned my back on Teresa and Casey and fled into the tide of people hurrying to lunch or their next class."(40) I'm pretty worried about this. I might have just scared my only chance at having a friend away. Uh-oh. This can not be good. Looks like I have to go make amends with the only person that has gotten me through this year.
I finally found Casey sitting in the library.I'm so glad he has a good sense of humor. When I entered | the library he told me "Don't apologize, just switch medications"(43). I got kinda mad about that but I figured I should just let it go and keep my goal in mind, getting Casey to be my friend.
I really should have known that this would happen . They had been whispering all morning . We were all sitting in science class this morning when it happened . Mrs. Shepherd had just started talking . She was barely finished saying evolution . "Next thing I knew, almost half of the room-14 people, to be exact-stood up, flipped their chairs around, and plopped into their seats with their backs turned to Ms . Shepherd."(59). Then Teresa spoke. She said that Ms. Shepherd | is not to teach about the unproven theory of evolution until she and all the other faculty each about intelligent design . Ms . Shepherd responded with having Casey
come up and read a statement. that said that teaching creationism in public schools violates the separation of church and state and that she believes strongly that this is correct . She told Teresa that she admires her curiosity but that she will have to learn about it from her clergy . "YOu could tell the back turners didn't like that one bit"(61) . Teresa tried to tell Ms . Shepherd that she wasn't done talking but Ms. Shepherd told her she was done for now or she could leave her class . Of course they decided to stay . What a joy for the rest of us.
to his house. That there really was no way that would ever happen. Casey's response? "My man will come round at three o'clock | Casey keeps asking me to come over to his house . I'm really starting to get worried about this. So I told him flat out that there is abso0lyutley no way I would ever be allowed over | this afternoon. Meet him on the south stairs."(57) He really can't be serious about anything can he? I told him i would ask my parents one last time tonight, even though I know I wont...
I really don't know how I'm going to word it to him. Uh-Oh. Well this is going to be fun.
Well, I had to work in my parents work room all yesterday. But at least I got some cash. It's Sunday. I don't have to go to church anymore...not since the incident.
My parents get up in the morning. "They do not wake me. They don't want to see me."(67) They go to church and I stay home. That's fine. I'm supposed to watch TV church sermons. I'm supposed to write a summary. My mom checks them on the Internet when she gets home. "Obviously if she can do that, I CAN DO THAT. Duh."(67) So instead if watching all those cheesy sermons I go onto the sight and get the summary. Then I do stuff that I want to do. Like today, I'm doing my homework.
