FC: TASK 7 POSTER ANALYSIS

1: The colors used within this poster consist of a bold red and black which are used to connote the genre of the film itself as horror. This genre of horror is shown through the colors representing and containing a significant link towards death and evil which is commonly related towards the horror genre. Furthermore it is bold and outstanding colors catch attention and make it stand out towards a targeted audience. The main figure within the poster is represented both graphically and photographically through the use of a black and red highlight that makes the figure itself more intimidating and frightful – connoting the horror genre. Furthermore the black splatter around the figure symbolize blood splatter and further connote a relation between death and the horror genre and the use of this graphic illustration makes the poster more visually impacting upon an audience. The message within this poster is primarily visual to catch an audience's attention and the use of a further bold title ’30 days of night’ makes the poster itself more outstanding through the bold red color and visually dynamic title to create a more unique and outstanding poster. The information upon this poster is very important to represent the genre of the movie as to specifically target the audience the movie is trying to get to watch – specifically horror fans within this instance. The poster is also an important part within the marketing campaign due to it being easily accessible towards all areas of media, to display and promote the poster within these various areas of media such as billboards, the poster itself and the Internet. Overall I believe this is an effective poster due to it accomplishing its aim of targeting a horror audience through the use of visual impact and promoting and communicating the film towards the audience it wants to see the movie.

3: The main colors used within the poster consist of a bold white, black and red which create an outstanding color scheme against the black sky background. These colors connote and symbolize a horror genre commonly related towards white, black and red to connote death (specifically red) and evil, as well as creating an eerie theme around the poster itself to connote the horror genre. The main symbols and object within the poster is the house itself surrounded by trees and a bold white sky. The house itself looks run down and in the middle of nowhere which symbolizes a haunted house commonly related towards the horror genre and instantly symbolize the theme of the movie. Furthermore the trees and surrounding the house also symbolize and connote a stereotypical setting for a horror movie such as a haunted woods and it also creates a further isolation within the poster which makes it more outstanding towards the audience. Finally the bold white sky in the background highlights the house further within the poster and suggests turbulence and drama revolved around the house itself. The message conveyed within this poster is primarily visual through the symbols and objects in the poster itself and this connotation of horror are further connoted through the bold title. The word ‘House’ dramatically stands out in the poster as it is the boldest color within red and the blood splatter overlaid over the font connotes that the house itself will be filled with death and horror. This use of verbal and visual message is very striking upon an audience. Furthermore the tag-line at the bottom of the poster further intensifies the poster and creates a further drama to the poster itself revealing a slight insight into the plot and the rhetorical question is used to engage the audience into thinking and consider what answer they would give which in turn further draws them into the poster. Information such as the director, actors and film production company within the credits is also a very important with drawing an audience through unique selling point of the ‘stars’ within the movie and if the company has a solid background within the horror genre will in turn persuade the audience to see it because of its previous work. 5: The main colors used within this image are strong bold vibrant colors of white, orange, red and black which are used to connote the certain genre and impact of the movie. The strong bold orange, red and black connote action and death within the background due too red being a very stereotypical connotation of death as well as orange connoting an action packed theme. The strong white color is used to make the movie headline font stand out against the various colors and objects within the film poster but still keeps attention upon the main action within the poster. The symbols of the explosion and helicopter in the background of the poster represent and connote a strong action genre based around a war – commonly involving these elements as well as this being represented through the army helicopter. This is further represented both photographically through the location of dirt roads and rubble upon the sides of the road representing and suggesting a war environment. Furthermore graphically the bold explosion signifies the war action genre and also makes the poster very impacting and outstanding immediately catching the eye and drawing it through the poster. The intended audience will be primarily any action/drama genre viewers as well as being above a certain age of possibly 16 due to the violent connotations within the poster. Furthermore a unique selling point is used within this movie poster displaying the directors name above the movie name to include a ‘stars’ name and draw a larger audience to the film itself. In continuation three awards are displayed at the top of the film poster which draws the viewers’ attention to the success of the movie. As well as this further attention is gained through the tag-line ‘war is a drug’ which represents the war/action genre of the movie and intrigues the viewer into why war is a drug? Information such as the director and awards won by the movie is also a very important factor to draw the viewer into the film through unique selling point of the ‘stars’ within the movie and the success of the movie itself. The poster is also an important part within the marketing campaign due to it being easily accessible towards all areas of media, to display and promote the poster within these various areas of media such as billboards, the poster itself and the internet. Furthermore the institutional production of the movie, Lionsgate, is known for producing such action films and therefore represents specialty in creating these films. Overall I believe this is an effective poster due to it accomplishing its aim of targeting a action/drama/war audience through the use of visual and verbal impact which in turn promotes and communicating the film towards the audience it wants to see the movie.

7: This poster uses many symbols to connote the genre of the movie and the theme of the movie itself. First of all the main symbol used in the poster is the crossbow which connotes death as well as action and is usually represented to revolve around a war/action movie genre. Furthermore the blood upon the side of the main figures face further represents this gritty action theme and connotes death, pain and fighting suggesting that this movie will revolve around this. The main figure within this poster is represented photographically as a serious and dangerous man through his strong aggressive facial expression connoting he is a fighter and has something to fight for also possibly suggesting the plot line of the movie. Furthermore the main figure, Russell Crowe, is used as a unique selling point due to his star quality and stereotypical action packed roles which further suggest the action genre movie. Furthermore, Ridley Scott and Cate Blanchett names are mentioned upon the movie poster to further heighten this star quality and unique selling point of a well-known and famous cast to draw the viewer into seeing the movie. The movie institution, Universal Pictures, is also commonly known for producing and distributing high quality action movies and therefore connotes to the audience that this will be a big blockbuster movie and therefore attract a wide audience. Overall I believe this is an effective poster due to it accomplishing its aim of targeting a action/war audience through the use of visual and verbal impact which in turn promotes and communicating the film towards the audience it wants to see the movie.

9: The main colors used within this poster are mainly bright and outstanding colors such as light blue and turquoise which represent a visually pleasing and cheerful image which connotes the comic genre through its light heartiness color scheme. The main symbol is in the top center of the poster which catches the audience eye – the plane flying through the heart shaped cloud – which represents and connotes heartbreak as it represents the stereotypical arrow through heart image which connotes to the audience that this may be a romantic comedy based upon heartbreak. This is further represented through the main figures within the poster, the couple within the foreground and man alone in the background connoting his heartbreak due to the couple within the foreground suggesting his love for the women. This is represented both photographically through the positioning of the figures and visually through the cloud representation. The message in the poster is primarily visual through the connotations above, however the verbal message at the top of the poster further highlights and backs up the representation of the figures and symbols and creates an overall generalization of his heartbreak and possible plot of the movie. I believe the intended audience is a comedy and romance audience being targeted as both genres are represented through the poster allowing a wider audience to be drawn into the poster. Furthermore a unique selling point and tag-line is used through the star quality of ‘knocked up’ and ‘the 40 year old virgin’ which are both highly rated comedy films and therefore suggests that this film will also be an high quality comedy. This also relates to the institutional context of the movie production due to previous productions within comedy this connotes that the film itself will be comedy genre and of a high quality. Overall I believe this is an effective poster due to it accomplishing its aim of targeting an comedy/romance audience through the use of visual and verbal impact which in turn promotes and communicating the film towards the audience it wants to see the movie.

11: The main colours used in this poster are very soft and light tones of grey and blue which connote a romantic genre theme to the audience due to this soft and subtle touch of the poster suggesting vulnerability and passion. The main symbol used within the poster is the image of the ship itself which connotes that the main part of the movie will be based around the titanic and on-board the ship following its journey. The main figures within the image further connote the romance genre by holding hands and displaying intimacy towards each other they are represented photographically as lovers and therefore connote the movies based around their love for each other upon the titanic. The message within this poster is primarily visual with the symbolic ship and main figures suggesting the movie plot and romance genre although the verbal message and tag-line further highlights this as a romantic genre and the passion reflected within the poster. Furthermore stars are used as a unique selling point displaying both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet name clearly upon the poster due to their fame within previous movies suggesting the strong cast of this movie. This is also seen within the top section of the poster displaying the director’s previous well known movies which connotes that this is by a strong and talented director. With both of these aspects from the actors and director it creates a strong representation that this movie will be high quality. Furthermore the institutional context of the movies production is by famous and well-known companies which therefore draw in a wider audience. Overall I believe this is an effective poster due to it accomplishing its aim of targeting a romance genre audience through the use of visual and verbal impact which in turn promotes and communicating the film towards the audience it wants to see the movie.
