FC: The Body: Gross, Yucky, and Oh So Cool!
1: In December, Mrs. Romero's and Mr. Bjerke's fifth graders participated in a videoconference with the Life Science Education Center of Marian College. They learned about some of the more unpleasant aspects of the human body, and in doing so, understood the science behind them. All of the students participated in an experiment whereby they created their own bacteria by running in place for 30 seconds, rubbing their sweaty foot with a Q-Tip and placing that Q-Tip in a plastic bag for 3 days. When they opened the bags three days later......PHEW! The students were involved in active learning with a person who was not their teacher, but an expert in the field who was in Indiana, not Yorktown Heights! They were able to converse with the expert, ask questions and interact with a person who was hundreds of miles away.....but the experience was first-hand and right in their own classroom!

5: Students listen and learn about the science behind some of the yuckier aspects of the human body. | "Is that why my body odor smells the way it does?"
