FC: The Giver By: Lois Lowry
 The Giver. by: Lois Lowry
In the book, The Giver, a friendly 12 year old boy named Jonas lives in a world of sameness. Jonas has two best friends in this book, Asher, and Fiona. Asher is also a 12 year old boy who loves to mess around. Fiona on the other hand is a very caring 12 year old girl. These two friends have always been very close with Jonas, until the ceremony
of twelve, where all the children receive their jobs to do for the rest of their lives. When Jonas receives his assignment as the receiver of memories, every thing changes. Jonas is singled out to learn special training from a elder named the giver. Asher and Fiona become confused by what's happening with their best friend, so they start to
disassociate with Jonas. Feeling upset Jonas continues on with his training and learns of all the past memories. A year of training goes by and Jonas is still in training. Though his training brings much joy, it also brings excruciating pain. One day the giver shows him what happens to people who are not disciplined in the community.
What happened to the misfits shocked Jonas. The community would kill the misfits. Of course the other people in the community didn't understand what killing was. They had no idea how awful it was because they have no feelings. Jonas and The Giver are the only ones who have feelings because they know the past and of caring, unlike the world they live in
of sameness. Frustrated and upset, Jonas devised a plan to leave the community and find elsewhere.
I think the most important scene is when Jonas sees the apple change from its dull color of gray and black to its natural color of red, when he is playing catch. I think this is an important scene
because it tells when Jonas starts seeing in colors, and is a sign of him becoming the receiver of memories.
I f i were a character in this book I would be a 20 year old from the distant past. I would help Jonas understand what's going on through his training. I would also be apart from the other characters. I would try to change things back to normal like in the past, so every one can experience happiness and pain.
I would most definitely change the outcome of the story, because I would have tried to change things back to their old ways. I would have changed them a little bit, just a it over time and then things would go back to normal.
