FC: The Mysterious Benedict Society | By Trenton Lee Stewart | Mystery/Fantasy

Table of Contents | Characters and their character traits....................2 Setting................................................................................3 Flow map.......................................................................4-5 Internal and External Conflicts................................6 Figurative language....................................................7 Rating..................................................................................8

Characters | Reynie: Observant, knowledgeable, responsible | Sticky: Timid, nervous, skillful | Kate: Resourceful, athletic, and daring | Constance: Stubborn, helpful, rude | Mr. Benedict: Strange, unpredictable, trustworthy | 2

Setting | Takes place in the present | The Learning Institute of the very Enlightened: A school the Mysterious Benedict Society (Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance) had to investigate for Mr.Benedict | Stonetown Harbor in Nomansan Island | Mr.Benedict's home | The Monk building: The place where the children tested their skills in order to be Mr.Benedict's spy | 3

Plot/flow map of the book | "Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?" This was a advertisement made for children who wanted to receive that opportunity, but first, they had to take a test. Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance had passed the strange test and were moving to their next task. | The four children were taken to Mr. Benedict's ( the man who made the ad and the tests) house and discussed what their next task was. Mr.Benedict wanted the four children to stop his long lost brother's(aka Mr.Curtain) invention called the Whisperer. This invention erases peoples' memories. | The next day, The children arrived at the Learning Institute of the very Enlightened , the school Mr.Curtain ran. Rhonda, who is Mr.Benedict's assistant had driven them there and transferred them to be currently students at the institute. | After a few days in the boarding school, they had discovered traps around the building, what Mr.Curtain was up to on the invention, and secret passages. Finally, with all their answers they needed to find out how to turn off the Whisperer. | 4

One night Mr.Curtain invited Reynie and Sticky to the tallest tower, which had held the Whisperer. He had wanted Sticky to go first to sit in it. This machine could only be controlled by Mr.Curtain, himself which made the children have a difficult time to turn it off. | When Kate and Constance had used the secret passages to enter the tower, guards have made them have difficulty too. They escaped them at the front entrance of the tower. But, just in time, the children found a way to distract Mr.Curtain. After when they had nearly given up, Mr.Benedict had stopped the machine right before it was too late. | 5

Internal Conflict: | Reynie felt as though he wasn't intelligent enough to outsmart Mr.Curtain's plans | Sticky did not think he had the confidence to face the Whisperer | External Conflicts: | Reynie and Sticky fought against Mr.Curtain and suprisingly learned his fear | Kate and Constance avoided threats from Martina (a student from the institute). | 6

Cause and Effects Relationships | There was an eye-catching newspaper ad for gifted children who wanted a special opportunity. Cause | Kids from Stonetown Bay tested their skills if they could receive the opportunity. Effect | Reynie always made a wise plan in a stressful situation. Cause | The other three children relied on him to come up of a plan. Effect | Constance complained and was rude to others daily. | Reynie, Sticky, and Kate were annoyed but got used to her usual complaints. | 7

Figurative Language | Reynie thought he was as thin as a stick. -Simile | Her grip was so strong, it was like getting your fingers caught in a drawer. -Simile | Redbirds twittered in the elm tree outside the open window. -Onomatopoeia

" | " | I rated this book 4 stars because it was very unique and had a surprising ending. But I didn't like how the characters were mostly at the institute instead of moving place to place. It also would been slightly better if Mr.Benedict would of appeared more often in the mission.
