FC: The Pearl By John Steinbeck

2: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. He grew up in a fertile agricultural valley that was about twenty-five miles off the Pacific Coast. He went to Stanford University studying literature in 1919. He left the university in 1925 without a degree. John wrote various novels. Some that he wrote are called The Pastures of Heaven, The Long Valley, Of Mice and Men, and The Pearl.
3: Most of the characters of this story live in a city called La Paz. La Paz is in southern Mexico. The story took place in the 18th century. Here there is a rich class and a poor class. There is no middle class. | This side of the city is where the doctor lives. All the rich people live in this area. Most of the people in this area are Spaniards. | This part of the city is where the poor class or lower class of people lived. They all lived in brush houses that were not well protected. This part of the city is where Kino, Juana, and Coyotito lived.
4: Kino Kino was the husband of Juana and the father of Coyotito. In the beginning, he was happy with his life. However, when he had later found the pearl, it had changed him. He was selfish and he was obsessed with the pearl.
5: Juana Juana is the wife of Kino and the mother of Coyotito. She is strong and obedient. She will do anything that Kino tells her to do. She will also do anything to keep her baby safe. In the beginning of the book, Juana had sucked out the poison from the scorpion sting out of Coyotio.
6: Coyotito Coytito is an infant. He is the son of Kino and Juana. In the beginning of the book, he is stung by a scorpion. The poison from the sting was sucked out by his mother, Juana. In the end of the story, his head is accidentally shot off, and he dies.
7: The Pearl Buyers There are three pearl buyers total. They all try to cheat Kino when Kino tries to sell the pearl. They see in amazement how big the pearl, and they try to buy it for a low price.
8: Chapter 1 Coyotito is stung by the scorpion. They try to go and see a doctor. the doctor refuses to help the baby. Kino becomes very angry. Kino punches the gate at the doctor's house.
9: Chapter 2 Kino goes diving for pearls. Kino finds the pearl of the world. It is very big. Coyotito's swollen wound from the scorpion sting has receded. Kino yells loudly and causes village to come and see what has happened.
10: Chapter 3 Kino tells village what he would do with money he gets for selling the pearl. He will marry Juana. He will buy a rifle. He will send Coyotito to school.
11: Chapter 4 Kino goes to try to sell the pearl. Pearl dealer examines it and says it is worthless and too big. Two more dealers come in the room and says the same thing. The highest offer he got for the pearl was 1500 pesos. Kino feels cheated and leaves. He does not sell the pearl.
12: Chapter 5 Juana tries to get rid of the pearl, but Kino stops her. Kino beats her. Kino is later attacked by someone. Kino kills the mysterious attacker after he was attacked a second time. Kino's canoe has a hole in it, and his house has burned down. Kino and his family hid in his brother's house. They leave the village.
13: Chapter 6 Three trackers have been following Kino and his family. Kino and Juana lose them in the mountains. The trackers find them again, but Kino kills all of the them. Coyotito dies, and Kino and Juana come back to the village. Kino throws the pearl back into the ocean.
