Project by Chris O'Connor Mrs. Crew 3rd hour
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in the year 1902. He attended Stanford University, where he took writing courses. However, in 1925, he left without completing them. In the time he worked on his first novel, Steinbeck earned a living at various jobs. He experimented throughout his writing career, focusing on topics such as marine biology, war, film making, and plays. John Steinbeck also won a Nobel Prize in 1962. He died in the year of 1968.
Setting: | The setting of the book is La Paz, Mexico, during the 18th century. A soldier that was granted the land, because of his services, established himself here. After a hurricane, the capital of Baja California, Loreto, was moved to San Antonio to La Paz.
Kino | Husband of Juana and father of Coyotito | Kino finds the "Pearl of the World" while diving. It starts a change in him, but he refuses to see that the pearl is causing bad things to happen in his life.
Mother of Coyotito and wife of Kino | Juana stands by her husband throughout the book, but warns Kino that the pearl "will destroy them all." | Juana
Coyotito | Son of Kino and Juana | Coyotito is bitten by a scorpion at the start of the book, but after the discovery of the pearl, the swelling around the wound starts to go down. He is shot at the end of the book, when a tracker mistakes his crying for a coyote.
The Doctor | At first, the doctor refuses to treat Coyotito, because the family doesn't have any money. After the discovery of the pearl, he treats Coyotito, and asks Kino for the pearl as a way to pay for his services.
Chapter 1 | We meet Kino, Juana, and their baby, Coyotito. The family begins the day. Juana makes corncakes for Kino and cleans the baby. When his parents notice a tiny movement, they see a scorpion working its way to Coyotito. It stings the baby, and Kino kills the scorpion. They rush to the doctor. Becuase they don't have any money, he refuses to treat Coyotito.
Chapter 2 | The family takes the canoe out into the water to where the pearl oysters are. Kino goes into the water, where he finds a large oyster. It is partially open, and a glow is emitted before the shell closes up. Kino forces the oyster loose, and carries it back up to the canoe. He opens the shell to discover a pearl. Immediately after Kino does this, the swelling on Coyotito's shoulder starts to go away.
News that Kino has discovered the pearl spreads throughout the town. The doctor visits the family and examines Coyotito. He says the infection will get worse, and gives the baby medicine. The doctor cures Coyotito. When asked about his pearl, Kino says he has it hidden. Later that night, there is an intruder in the house. Kino is wounded by them. Juana tells him to get rid of the pearl, because it will destroy them all. | Chapter 3
Chapter 4 | Kino and his family prepare to meet with pearl dealers. Juan Tomas tells his brother to make sure they don't cheat him. They all try to deceive him or believe it is too large or too soft. Kino makes plans to go to the capital city, and try to sell it there.
Chapter 5 | Juana takes the pearl and goes running toward the ocean. Kino catches up to her, and he hits and kicks her. On the way back to their house, he is attacked. Juana finds him on the ground, with a dead man beside him. The family's canoe is broken, and their brush house is burned. They hide out in Juan Tomas' house. Kino wants to head for the north, and he will not let the pearl go because it has "become his soul."
Chapter 6 | Kino is leading his family to the north. He is careful to cover their tracks. After awaking from a dream, Kino notices the trackers. There are two on foot and one on horseback. The one on the horse has a rifle. Kino and his family avoid the trackers by hiding in various locations. When they reach a cave, Kino tells Juana to stay put and make sure the baby doesn't cry. Then, he begins to work his way down the mountain. As he nears the trackers, they mistake Coyotito's crying for that of a coyote's. The tracker with the rifle shoots Coyotito. Kino kills the trackers. Kino and Juana return to the town, where Kino throws the pearl back into the sea.
Theme | The theme of this story is that power can corrupt honest men. I believe this because Kino became a different person after he discovered the pearl. He wouldn't let it go, despite the fact that it caused bad things to happen.
