S: The Pearl By: John Steinbeck
BC: THE MORAL | The moral of this story is that when you let greed over run your life, nothing good can come out of it. Also, when you let the things that you have make you forget about everything you had, you lose a big piece of yourself. You must always stay true to who you are. Once you forget, there's no time to remember.

3: John Steinbeck was an amazing, American writer who lived from February 27, 1902 – December 20, 1968. Steinbeck wrote a lot of great American literature. Among his works, there is Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden. Steinbeck has won many awards including a Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath and a Nobel Prize for literature. In 1902, Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. He is of German and Irish descent. Like his mother, Steinbeck was an avid reader and writer. Steinbeck attended Stanford University for 6 years and later left before obtaining a degree. Steinbeck's first literary success was the novel tortilla flat. Steinbeck wrote sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories.
4: La Paz is the capital city of the Baja California Sur. La Paz translates to "the peace". The city has a population of 189,176.
6: KINO | Kino is the "husband" of Juana and the father of Coyotito.
7: Juana is the "wife" of Kino and the mother of Coyotito.
8: COYOTITO | Coyotito is the son of Juana and Kino.
9: The doctor is a racist, money hungry man whom compares Indians to animals.
10: CHAPTER 1 | In chapter 1, the author introduces Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. The conflict starts when a scorpion stings Coyotito. After being stung, Juana made a rare decision to take Coyotito to the doctor. No one from their village ever went to see the doctor, so it was considered very unusual. When they got to the doctor, the doctor turned them away. Out of rage, Kino struck the gate outside of the doctors house with his fist.
11: CHAPTER 2 | In chapter 2, the family goes to the beach by their village. Coyotito's arm was swollen with poison, so Juana made a poultice to put on the sting and hopefully stop the swelling. As Kino started diving for oysters, Coyotito's arm started getting better. Kino saw a large pearl in an oyster, so he dove down and got it.
12: CHAPTER 3 | Soon after finding the pearl, everyone in the village knows. Considering Kino's stress and new found fortune, villagers begin to wonder what will become of the money obtained from the pearl. Kino , too wonders what will become of the pearl and decides that he wants a bunch of luxuries for him and his family. After the doctor hears of Kino's good luck, he decides to pay a house visit to Coyotito. The doctor tells Kino and Juana that Coyotito is about to become very ill and that he needs medicine. After the doctor gives Coyotito the medicine, he becomes even more ill than before. That night, someone broke into Kino's hut looking for the pearl and in the heat of the attempted burglary hit Kino.
13: CHAPTER 4 | Kino decides it's time to sell the pearl, but when he goes to the pearl buyers they tell him that his pearl is relatively worthless. Feeling cheated, Kino becomes enraged and decides to go to the capital and get a true estimate for his pearl. At nightfall, Kino was attacked again. After his attack, Juana decides that they need to destroy the "evil pearl."
14: CHAPTER 5 | In chapter 5, Juana tries to throw the pearl into the ocean but is stopped by Kino. After Kino stopped her, he punched her and also kicked her. When Kino was on his way home, he was attacked and killed his attacker. While Kino was being attacked, the pearl fell out of his pocket, but Juana found it. Before they could get back to the house, the "dark things" had already burnt it down. Kino wanted to hide at his brother's house, but then decides to travel North.
15: CHAPTER 6 | After fleeing, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito headed North. Not too long after, trackers began looking for them. They tricked the trackers with clever ploys to get them where Kino could kill them. When Kino was about to attack the trackers, Coyotito began to cry and the tracker shot at the cry, thinking it was a coyote. After he shot, Kino killed all the trackers. In the end, we found out that the tracker shot the top of Coyotito's head off, killing him. Kino and Juana returned home and threw the pearl into the ocean.
