2: John Steinbeck In 1902, right on the west coast, John Steinbeck was born. He attended Stanford University, which is where he took his literature courses. He then moved to New York to become a journalist. Some of his best novels include "Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men." He received the Nobel Prize in 1962. Sadly, he passed away in 1968.
5: The setting in the story is La Paz during the 19th century.
6: Kino is the main character. He is the father of Coyotito, and is ''married'' to Juana.
7: Juana is the mother of Coyotito, and is ''married'' to Kino.
8: Coyotito is the son of Kino and Juana. Unfortunately, he dies at the end of the story.
9: DOCTOR The doctor's race and Kino's race despise one another. He refused to help Coyotito until he found out about the ''pearl of the world.''
10: CHAPTER 1 The baby was stung by a scorpion. They went to see the doctor. The doctor wouldn't help, and Kino struck the gate. We were introduced to Kino and his family.
11: CHAPTER 2 Kino needed money for the scorpion sting. He went out to find pearls. He found the "pearl of the world." Coyotito started feeling better when he found it.
12: CHAPTER 3 The news of the pearl got around town. Kino announces his plans when he becomes rich. The priest goes to the brush house. Kino was attacked. He becomes paranoid at this point.
13: CHAPTER 4 Kino takes his pearl to the pearl buyers. They make a terrible offer, and said that the pearl was pretty much worthless. He becomes furious, and says he will take his pearl to La Capitol. Once again he is attacked.
14: CHAPTER 5 Juana tried to throw the pearl into the sea. Kino punched and kicked her. Kino killed a man. Someone set their house on fire, and put a hole in their canoe. Kino and his family stayed with Juan Tomas until they left.
15: CHAPTER 6 Kino and his family ran away. They were followed by trackers into the mountains. Kino killed all the trackers, but Coyotito was shot and killed. Kino and Juana returned home. They threw the pearl back into the ocean.
16: Moral of the story: You can never trust your eyes.
