FC: Pillars of the Earth: Jack and Aliena
Section 4 of is mainly about the relationship between Jack and Aliena. Aliena is set to marry Alfred, although she doesn't love him, because he has money to support Richard. Jack gets upset and leaves (the fact that he ran away from prison was also a motivator in his decision). Jack runs away to Spain in hopes of finding his father's family. Aliena, soon after marrying Alfred, is miserable, as well as pregnant with Jack's child. After having the child. which Alfred knows is not his, Aliena sets off to make things right and find Jack. While away, Jack has nearly gotten married, as well as sparked a new interest in the architecture he sees along the way. Jack's new dream is to finish Tom Builder's cathedral, but make it as splendid as the cathedrals he sees during his journey. | The Pillars of the Earth
Jack has been in love with Aliena since he first met her when he was 12. At the time, she thought nothing of him. However, later in life she began to notice that the strange little kid she once knew was growing up. Due to unpleasant experiences earlier in her life, Aliena is scared of loving Jack.
Unfortunately, Aliena realizes she loves Jack on her wedding day...hours before she is due to marry Jack's awful stepbrother, Alfred. Alfred took over as master builder after his father, Tom Builder died. Alfred has enough money to support Aliena's brother, Richard, as a knight (an oath made to her father). Aliena marries Alfred. Jack runs away. Jack's mom, Ellen, curses the marriage.
Aliena soon realizes that she's pregnant...with Jack's son. She keeps the secret to herself until the baby is born, a day full of drama, as the cathedral also falls on the same day due to Alfred's poor building. | Alfred kicks Aliena out. Aliena decides to go find Jack, wherever he may be. She decides to head to Spain, for that's where he originally claimed to be. Upon reaching Spain, Aliena finds a family that remembers the redheaded mason. In fact, Jack almost married one of the daughters in the household. However, Jack still loved Aliena, and couldn't bring himself to marry someone else, even though (to the best of his knowledge), Aliena was still married to Alfred. Aliena carried on her journey.
Finally, Aliena finds Jack in France. She is met with two surprises; Jack has found his father's family, and Jack is now accompanied by a mysterious statue, a Madonna that "cries. | Jack received the statue from the girl he almost married. He figured out the secret; changes in temperature extract moisture from the stones in the statue's eyes. | Most people don't know this, and see the stature as a miracle. Jack and Aliena travel back to England together, sharing their "miracle" along the way.
More importantly, though, Jack and Aliena have found each other. Aliena is ready to marry Jack, regardless of what Alfred or Richard may say. Together, Aliena and Jack name their son Tommy, after Tom Builder. They return to Kingsbridge.
Jack and Aliena come home to find Kingsbridge suffering and the Cathedral plans at a halt. Jack hopes to take over and live happily ever after, once he marries Aliena. However, the evil William finds out that Aliena and Jack are together, and is still angry from when Aliena rejected him so many years ago. William gets Bishop Walearn to reject the request for Aliena's annulment from Alfred. Prior Philip, never one to break the rules, won't let Jack and Aliena live together, as they are not married. Thus begins Jack and Aliena's dysfunctional life together, as a couple with a child, living in separate homes.
