FC: Virgina History created by Zachary P.

1: Jamestown 1607. Three ships arrived only white men where on board. They had supplies like food and water.The three ships names where Susan constant, Godspeed,The discovery.

2: They picked Jamestown because they thought they had a lot of clean water to drink.They also had deep enough water to dock. It was a economic venture because they wanted gold and silver

3: They would be safe from the Spanish from land and sea because it was on a peninsula.

4: The colonist had all kinds of diseases. One of them was measles, which was like chicken pocks.

5: The Indians where a big problem to the colonists. Another problem was that they didn't have clean drinking water so they got measles.They didn't have a lot of food.

6: Captain John Smith was a strong leader of Jamestown. When he left the starving time began thats when the Indians began to attack a lot more and kill any body who went outside to get supplies.So the people starved without his leadership

7: Pocahontas was a daughter of Chief Powhatan he almost killed Captain John Smith but Pocahontas saved him.Pocahontas marred John Rolfe. John Rolfe made a new way to farm tobbcco it was a cash crop.

8: King James the 1st granted charters to Jamestown. The first charter said that they where able to land in North America.

9: One of the reasons that Jamestown came diverse is that African Americans came as slaves to work in the tobacco fields after 5 to 7 years they where let go and they got promised land.

11: King James the 1st made the colonist pay for the French and Indian war.With all the taxes.

12: The king of England made the colonist pay taxes for sugar,coffee,indigo,and certain kinds of wine.This was called the sugar act. Another kind of tax was the tax for every newspaper,pamphlet,and other legal document had to have a stamp or,British seal,on it.This was called the stamp act.

13: The Townshend act put taxes on glass,lead,paints,paper,and tea

14: The Boston tea party was organized by the sons of liberty. The sons of liberty did this because they did not want the tax for tea any more it cost the government in our time 3 million dollars for the tea.The Boston massacre was a riot with five people shot they where colonist they shot because they heard a loud noise so the Red Coats thought the colonist shot at them.

15: The Sons of liberty was a group of patriots that were furious at the taxes.They organized the Boston tea party.They wanted to fight for independence or die trying.Patriots where people who are loyal to there country and supports it.

16: The British had the best army in the world they where called Red Coats or lobster bakes.England was crouded and packed with people.Loyalist remained loyal to England and loyal to the king.King George the 3rd wanted to pay for the war by taxing the colonist.The war was the French and Indian war it cost 3 millon.Lord Cornwallis was the commander of the British he wasn't in the first battle of Lexington and Concord but he was in all the other battles.He surrendered at Yorktown.

17: The patriots were a group of people that supported there country and fought for freedom.The Sons of liberty were a group of patriots that wanted freedom from England.The colonist were people that lived in America they were made up of loyalist and patriots.The minute men were people that would fight at any minute.

18: James Lafayette was a great African American soldier he earned his freedom by fighting for the Continental army.George Washington was the commander in chief of the Continental he planed the battle of Trenton and became the 1st president of the united states.Patrick Henry inspired other patriots from other colonies to go against taxation without representation.His speach was Give me liberty or give me death

19: Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence witch states that all colonist should have independence from Great Britain.Jack Jouett rode on his horse 40 miles to Monticello to warn Thomas Jefferson that the British were coming to capture him and Patrick Henry.Paul Revere also rode to Monticello to warn Thomas Jefferson that the British were coming.Ben Franklin convinced France to join there side.

20: African Americans were divided in war because they were promised freedom if they won on both sides mostly Great Britain had them.American Indians were also divided in war because they were promised there land back by Great Britain.

21: Woman kept the farms going and made clothes for the soldiers and they cared for the sick.

22: The battle of Great Bridge was the first battle fought in Virginia it was located 7 miles south of Norfolk,Virginia | The battle of Lexington and Concord was the shot heard around the world it was the first battle of the American Revolution the colonist won it and showed that they were willing to fight for they freedom.

23: The battle of Saratoga was the the turning point of the war because France joined their side to beat Great Britain.They had a very good Navy.

24: The battle of Yorktown was the last battle of the American Revolution.The British surrendered because they were over sized.


26: George Washington was the commander in chief of the Continental Army.He was called the father of our country because of his leadership. He also became the 1st president of the US.He was also the leader of the constitutional convention.James Madison was a great compromiser and a awesome note taker for this he was the father of the constitution.

27: Thomas Jefferson was the main writer of the Declaration of Independence. He wrote the Virginia Statue of Religious Freedom.He let anybody use what every religion they wanted.George Mason was the writer of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. He also influenced the Bill of Rights.

29: Legislative branch is a branch that writes laws and makes laws the General Assemble is in it so is the senate and the House of Delegates. | The Executive branch is run by the governor and if he likes the law it becomes one | The Judicial branch is the branch that decides if laws have been broken.It includes lawyers,judgeand courts

30: Tobacco drained minerals in the soil.It made many farmers move west and deep south for new farm land.Virginians moved into the Western territories looking for large areas of land and opportunities.As Virginians moved they took there traditions,ideas,and cultures with them.

31: Abolitionist are people that strongly do not want slavery and will fight for it.Harriet Tubman was a famous abolitionist that escaped from the south and got to the north and went back south to help over 300 slaves escape.

32: John Brown was a abolitionist that led a unsuccessful rebellion he tried to capture Harpers Ferry but he got overwhelmed and they got killed but he got hanged.Nat Turner led a successful rebellion that killed 60 white men,women and children he was also a black slave.

33: Divided Nation The North and south had different economies. The south had Agricultural and had slaves. The north had factories.The south wanted new states to be slave states the north wanted new states to be free states.

34: Creation of West Virginia. One reason that West Virginia left is that they had different economies. The west did not want slaves and the east wanted slaves. The disagreements led to West Virginia breaking away from Virginia.

35: Abraham Lincoln was firmly opposed to slavery. This is why seven other states seceded to form the Confederate States of America. He was also the president of the Union. He came up with the anaconda plan

36: The Union had awesome Generals! Like Abraham Lincoln he came up with maybe one of the best plans ever it was called the Anaconda Plan. He was also a great leader. Another awesome leader is Ulysses S. Grant. He led the Union to many great victories. He also won the civil war. | V

37: The confederacy also had many great generals! Like president Jefferson Davis. He was the leader for the Confederacy. Another great leader is Robert E. Lee,he led the confederacy to many great victories. Stonewall Jackson helped Robert E. Lee out he stood like a stonewall at the Battle of Bull Run. J.E.B. Stuart was also a great cavalry commander. | S

38: The battle of Bull Run was the first major clash of the Civil war. Stonewall Jackson got his nickname there. He got His nickname by standing like a stonewall. The confederacy won. | The sea battle of the USS Monitor and the USS Merrimack was the first sea battle of the Civil war. It was fought to a draw. | The battle of Fredericksburg was a major win for the confederacy. | Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil war. The confederacy won this battle. | The battle of Petersburg was a huge win for the Union because it had most of the railroads. It led to the taking over of Richmond

39: General Grant surrendered to Robert E. Lee at Appomattox court house on April 9th and it ended the civil war. The Union had won!!!!!!!!! After the civil war Jefferson was captured by two Union soldiers he was dressed like a women.

40: The money the confederacy owned was useless because they could only use Union money. Also all the banks were closed. | Virginia faced a lot of problems during reconstruction, like millions of freed slaves needed houses,clothing,food and jobs.Also Virginia's economy was in ruins. | Railroads,bridges,plantations,and crops were destroyed because the civil war.

41: The congress created the Freedman's Bureau in 1865. This provided schools,food and medical care for freed slaves and others in the south. Sharecropping was a new system created because the farmers of the south did not have a lot of money. The former slaves also needed land and work. When they were done with harvesting the owner got a share of what the former slave harvested.

42: After the reconstruction African Americans rights were slowly taken away after reconstruction,laws were passed that made it hard for them to vote and hold office. Also "Jim Crow laws" were made to make life hard on African Americans. Poll taxes were made to keep them from voting too. African Americans were forced to use different drinking fountains,public schools,. They also could not sit together on buses,trains or restaurants,

43: Terms to know Segregation: The separation of people,usually based on race or religion. Prejudices: negative opinions formed without proof. Discrimination: An unfair difference in the treatment of people. Jim Crow Laws:laws established segregation or separation of the races and reinforced prejudices held by many white people.

44: After the Civil War,advances in technology,and transportation were key factors to Virginia's growing economy. As more people traveled ,Virginia's city's grew with more people,businesses and factories . The needs for better roads increased.Railroads were a key to the expansion of business,agriculture, and industry.They helped small towns grow into city's. Railroads centers attracted the buildings of factories were clothing,furniture,and other useful items were made. Other parts of Virginia grew as other industries developed. Coal deposits,discovered in Tazewell Country after the civil war and in nearby counties,became a source of new jobs for residents of southwest Virginia. Tobacco farming and tobacco products recovered from the effects of the civil war and again became an important Virginia industry.

45: There were a lot of heroes during the civil rights movement. Like Martin Luther King Jr. he protested non violently and gave a speech called I have a dream. Another hero was Arther Ashe He was a spokesperson and a professional tennis player. Rosa Parks choose not to stand bus boycott soon began. Maggie Walker was a daughter of a freed slave she taught us about banks and ways to save. Douglas Wilder was the first black governor. Jakie Robinson was the first black major league baseball player. Oliver W. Hill was a layer at this time.
