FC: "We Didn't Start The Fire" - Billy Joel Project
1: This Social Studies project is an acknowledgment to the year 1953. As you read this scrapbook you will learn about the remarkable events and people that made 1953 a year full of memories. This project is called "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel after studying this song in our Grade 8 Social Studies Class. This song includes all the important people,things and events that happened from 1949-1989
2: Joseph Stalin | Joseph Stalin was the U.S.S.R dictator for a long period of time. Joseph Stalin fought against Hitler in World War II but they were once in the same side. Joseph Stalin wanted the world to become communist, while the United States was spreading democracy. This caused tensions between both countries and in various opportunities it almost turned into a real war, this event was called the Cold War because there was no killing, and no military involved. During this time The United States and The Soviet Union were two biggest powers in the world. The Soviet Union took over Eastern Europe. And the United States had Western Europe on its side.
3: The United States created an organization to keep away the Soviet Union from America, This organization is called NATO and it still exists today. Joseph Stalin brought The Soviet Union to its highest point and made the country one of the strongest. Stalin also took over the eastern part of Berlin and The United States the Western Part. Later Stalin built the Berlin Wall to keep away the United States, France and Great Britain. Joseph Stalin also tried to go to Cuba to bomb the United States. But thanks to NATO he was unable to do so. He also brought nuclear power to the Soviet Union and he was very important during the 1950s. He died in the year 1953 and he was succeeded by Georgi Malenkov
4: Georgi Malenkov
5: Georgi Malenkov was a soviet communist leader. He was born in 1902 and he died when he was 86 years old. He was Stalins trust. In 1946, he became a full member of politburo and a deputy premier. He succeeded Stalin as a premier in March, 1953, after Stalins death. Malenkov was Prime Minister for two years and, for a short time, head of the Communist Party. But, Nikita Khrushchev replaced him as party head. He also gained notoriety in the Soviet Union for his personal role in helping conduct the Stalinist purges in which millions of Russians died. In February 1955, he was forced to resign, He assumed the blame for the failure of the government's agricultural policy; he was succeeded by Nikolai Bulganin, with Khrushchevs support for the post. In 1957, Malenkov was removed from all important posts for his role in the “antiparty faction” opposing Khrushchev. He was kicked out from the party in 1961.
6: Nasser | Gamal Abdel Nasser was an army officer in 1952 that lead Egypt to independence. He is known to be Egypts hero. Egypt was Great Britains colony for years and thanks to him Egypt was free again. He was born on January 1918 in Alexandria, Egypt. And He died on 1970. On 1953 he took the leadership of government and he took part on the New Republic government. He replaced General Mohammed Neguib as president.
7: Nasser is remembered because he wanted to modernize Egypt. Even though during his rule the things did not work out perfectly because his army was not good Nasser did what he could. Egypt was defeated by Israel. And Egypt was also humiliated in the 1967 War. But he was very important for Egyptians, He did a great job during his time, And he is remembered for helping Egypt. He was succeeded by Anwar Sadat.
9: Sergéi Sergéyevich Prokófiev was born in Sontsovka in April 23 on 1891. He was a Russian composer that studied in Russia them moved to New York and settled in Moscow. He was a brilliant pianist and he composed Major work. He composed plenty of music. The Classical was his first symphony composed in 1918, He also composed Peter and the Wolf. He composed a cantata called Alexander Nevski on 1939. The Ballets wrote the year before. He also composed Romeo and Juliet the same year. He also composed and Opera called War and Peace. His most important symphony was No. 5. He died in Moscow on March 5th 1953
10: Communist Bloc | In the song “We didnt start the fire by Billy Joel” the Communist Bloc is named. The communist bloc is the name for the f Communist countries of Eastern Europe. This Communist Bloc started with Eastern Europe and then some countries like China and North Vietnam became communist. The countries that were involved in the communist Bloc are: Cuba, Eastern Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Albania, China and Vietnam.
11: A lot of countries were involved in this communist bloc and they were against the nationalists that included the United Stated and Eastern Europe. This communist bloc was created during the cold war (1945-1960). This communist bloc was created because the Soviet Union wanted communism to be the government throughout the world and the United States spread communism around the world. Also The U.S and The former U.S.S.R had many differences that caused this countries to have problems the causes were economic ideas and ideological opinions.
