FC: OPERATION eNDURING fREEDOM | Spc. kIRKUS, pAUL 2009 - 2010

1: A Tough Mission: As the 478th TC CO began deployment proceedings this week, federal officials were locked in debate over whether to expand the U.S. presence in Afghanistan --- eight years after the war there began. The war has become a never-ending cycle of house-to-house searches and other military efforts that simply allow the U.S. to hold its position in the country, Flores said grimly as he took a break from preparations. One common saying he often hears, he said, is that "we have the watches, (but the Taliban insurgents) have the time." However, the overall U.S. mission in Afghanistan isn't his focus; he simply wants his company to do its assigned job and then get home safely, he said. The transport company is tasked with getting food, ammunition and other supplies across long distances in the difficult Afghan terrain while avoiding roadside bombs and sniper fire. "There's no denying it, there's going to be contact" with the Taliban, Flores said. | SPC, KIRKUS | NORTH COUNTY TIMES: Local Army reservists to depart for Afghanistan: 478TH TRANSPORTATION COMPANY By BARBARA HENRY - Friday, October 30, 2009 | Front Page News: Army reservists hustle to formation during a deployment ceremony at Camp Pendleton on Friday

11: Proud Wife!! | Camp Pendelton, CA | Paul G. Kirkus | HONOR COURAGE COMMITTMENT

12: We come together filled with sorrow for the thirteen Americans that we have lost, with gratitude for the lives that they led; and with a determination to honor them through the work we carry on. We are a nation that endures because of the courage of those who defend it. We saw that valor in those braved bullets here at Ft. Hood, just as surely as we see it in those signed up knowing that they would serve in harm's way. Here, at Ft. Hood, we pay tribute to thirteen men and women who were not able to escape the horror of war, even in the comfort of home. It may be hard to comprehend the twisted logic that led to this tragedy. But this much we do know - no faith justifies these murderous and craven acts, no just and loving God looks upon them with favor. So we say goodbye to those who now belong to eternity. We press ahead in pursuit of the peace that guided their service. May God bless the memory of those we lost. And my God bless the United States of America. ~President OBama~ | Ft. Hood, Texas November 5, 2009
