1: The Homestead Act May 20,1862
2: Anyone who had not went to war against the US Government and was at least 21 years old or the head of a household, could file an application to claim a federal land grant. This included freed slaves also. They had to reside on the land for five years, and show evidence of improvements.
3: There were 3 steps: 1. File an application 2. Improve the land 3. File for deed
4: Morrill Land Grant
5: July 2, 1862 | The government gave the states land and the states sold the land and used the money to support the schools or establish new schools. This allowed children to attend school, regardless of financial status, and it provided more opportunities of studies other than liberal arts, such as agriculture and the mechanical arts.
6: July 1, 1862 | The Act funded construction of a railroad and telegraph line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean.

8: February 8, 1887 | Dawes Severalty Act | This act prevented Indians from becoming US Citizens because they had to wait 25 years and and have a competency certificate. The lands that were not alloted to the Indians was given to the Whites.
11: Oklahoma Land Rush | April 22, 1889 | 2 millions acres of unassigned land was available for people to settle. "Unlike Rome, the city of Guthrie was built in a day. To be strictly accurate in the matter, it might be said that it was built in an afternoon."
