FC: Our most treasured family heirlooms are our sweet family memories. | The Combs - Dean Family

1: The Combs - Dean Family Fay Everett Combs (3/2/33) and Nancy Kaye Dean (6/25/37) were married on New Year's Eve (12/31/1956) at the Jacksonville Methodist Church, Jacksonville, NY. Dad was born in Romulus, NY and was the son of Ray and Alice Combs. He was the youngest and had two older sisters, Elsie and Betty. Both of his parents were only children so he did not have any first cousins. His dad operated a large farm while his mother cared for the children. His dad died at age 44 from lung cancer and his mother died at age 36 from a burst appendix. Betty was in college, so dad and aunt Elsie lived with his mother's parents, Lesbia (Jennie) and Jesse Fay Stewart. They were wonderful grandparents and took very good care of them. Grandma Jennie was very talented, she played the piano at a very young age. She composed a song for the Presidential campaign, but was submitted to late to be used. Grandpa Jesse was also a farmer. Dad remembers hitching up the horses standing on crates to help his grandfather.

2: Dad doesn't remember much about his parents, but does recall coming home from church one Sunday. He had a balloon and insisted his dad blow it up while he was driving. He made such a fuss that his father tried to blow up the balloon and went off the road. Another time he remembers going to the store with his dad and there was a little wheel barrow and dad cried until his dad bought it for him. His mother died from an burst appendix. He remembers coming home from school after a snow storm when he was in kindergarten. They kept the kids in school over night because they couldn't get them home. When he got home, the house was cold as the fire had gone out because his mom was too sick to keep it going. They had to take her to the hospital where she later died. Dad and Aunt Elsie had to move in with his mother's parents. The family farm and equipment all had to be sold and they had auction. They had beautiful furniture, some of it went to Aunt Betty's house who had moved to Maine. She had the family photos and heirlooms that were later lost in a house fire. When dad was a senior in highschool and after his grandmother had died After dad graduated from Interlaken High School in 1954, he attended Alfred State University for engineering. Unfortunately his money ran out and decided to go into the United States Army. He was a military policeman and traveled to Europe by ship. He visited many places, one of his favorites was the "The Leaning Tower of Pisa".
