Pastor James Hartford Campbell (Founder) Mother Helen Campbell (Wife)
Church History | In 1971 – On a quest to fulfill his call to the Pastoral Office, Pastor Hartford Campbell established United Goodwill Temple Church through the acquaintances of his cousin Ann Rogers and childhood friends Danny and Albert Worley from Fairmont, North Carolina. Prior to establishing the United Goodwill Church, Pastor Campbell had served as a Minister in the Methodist Church and after coming to New York he attended a number of Church of God In Christ houses of worship. In one of those worship service he attended at First Church of God in Christ he met his wife, Helen Johnson. With the support of his wife Helen J. Campbell and his friends, he worked diligently to establish the church, although he held services in various locations. At one of these services, our Church Mother, Velma Worley (McQueen at that time) was introduced to Pastor Campbell after being invited by his cousin Ann to hear him speak. Upon reflection, Mother Worley stated “what was meant to be just a chance meeting turned into a spiritual connection and life altering experience”. Over the years, the church grew and members came and went. Mother Henderson was known from fellowshipping with other churches and later joined United Goodwill as 1st Church Mother. Pastor Campbell always was involved with the youth and attracted a great number of young people under his leadership. One Friday night, Pastor Campbell instructed Mother Worley and Mother Campbell to pray and ask God to send him some help. God knowing the needs of the Church and who was purposed to help the Man of God lead the people of GOD. Pastor Campbell trusted God to fulfill his promise of help, and that help came in 1979 in an unexpected package. In the person of Luevonzar Williams. Pastor Campbell’s health began to fail in the mid 1990’s and under the guidance and direction of God and to ensure the continuity of the ministry, on June 21, 1998 he assumed the role of Overseer and ordained and installed Pastor Luevonzar Stokes who was the Assistant Pastor to the Office of Pastor, Evang. Tawana M. Williams, Youth Department/YWCC President was elevated to the Office of Assistant Pastor and Elder Steven J. Brinkley was installed as Special Assistant to the Pastor.
One of Pastor Campbell's old writings. | TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN IN THIS MATTER. MAY THE HOPE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST BE WITH YOU ALL, AND MAY HIS GRACE ENABLE EACH OF YOU TO CONTINUE IN HIS SERVICE. I LONG TO SEE THE TOMORROW OF THE SAINTS; WHEN WE SHALL ALL STAND AROUND GODS THRONE, SINGING AND PRAISING HIM, AND REJOICING IN HIS NAME FOR THE VICTORY OF OVERCOMING WILL BE OURS ETERNALLY. THE DAY IS FAR SPENT, AND THE NEED FOR STEADFAST SOULS ARE GREAT, SO I EXHORT EACH OF US TO BE STILL AND SEE THE SALVATION OF THE LORD IN OUR BEHALF. WHAT IS SALVATION? IT IS THE PROCESS OF GODS DIVINE LOVE, HIS POWER WORKING IN OUR LIVES TO BRING US TO THAT POINT IN HIM WHICH IS PERFECT IN HIS EYES. IT BEGINS GODS SPIRITUAL PROCESS IN OUR HEARTS, MINDS, AND SOULS. SALVATION IS GODS INTELLECT STIRRING OUR PUR MINDS, IT BRINGS US FROM THE CARNAL TO THE SPIRITUAL.
PASTOR J. HARTFORD CAMPBELL | WHAT IS HOPE? HOPE IS THE EXPECTATION BROUGHT ON BY SALVATIONS PROCESS WORKING IN OUR HEARTS. IT IS THE LACK OF A WISH, IT IS THE IDEA OF A PERSON DESIRING SOMETHING FROM THE FUTURE, BUT KNOWING THAT HE MUST WAIT TO OBTAIN IT. IT IS THE ANTICIPATION WHICH GIVES US THE DRIVE TO GO ONWARD. IT IS THE EXPECTATION THAT OUR DREAMS WILL COME TO PASS. HOPE IS FOR THE FUTURE; UNLIKE FAITH, FAITH IS FOR NOW, BECAUSE THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT WITH IT WE CAN SPEAK TO THE MOUNTAINS, AND AT THAT TIME THEY WILL BE MOVED INTO THE SEA. HOPE IS THE PUSHING FORCE OF SALVATIONS PROCESS. IT IS GODS DIVINE ACT OF INSPIRATION FOR HIS PEOPLE; HE GIVES US HOPE. FOR WHEN A PERSONS HOPE DIES, IT IS LIKE HE IS DEAD, DAILY HE WALKS AROUND IN GLOOMINESS, HE KEEPS A LOOK OF DEFEAT ON HIS FACE, SORROW AND SELF-PITY BECOMES HIS COMPANIONS. ONCE SALVATION IS EVIDENT IN OUR LIVES THE SPIRITUAL PROCESS AND GROWTH BEGINS AT THAT MOMENT. IT CONTIUES TO WORK FOR GOD IN US; POINTING US TO THAT PERFECT HOPE IN JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD. LET THE READERS READ WITH LOVE AS I HAVE SO WRITTEN. MAY THE LOVE, PEACE AND HOPE OF OUR GOD WALK WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO.
"SALVATION IS THE LIFTING PROCESS OF GODS DIVINE PEACE AND HIS PROMISE TO SAVE. IT IS THE DIVINE STRENGTH OF GOD BUILDING US INTO SPIRITUAL GIANTS."
