When I was growing up in Palm Springs, California, my mom's best friend Sue would fly in for a week to spend time with us and the many friends she made over her years of visiting. I was always so excited upon her arrival - like my own real life Cat in the Hat, Sue came with a carpenter bag filled with treasures: clothes and shoes for my mom and I. She would open the bag and start throwing things at us, all perfectly sized and quite wonderful. I was really lucky to grow up with my own Cat in the Hat. And now, years later, a new generation of daughters get their own Auntie Sue Sue, and they can experience her warm and loving ways. Sue, you are and always have been like another mother to me and I love you - so does everyone in the extended Gelfand and Stearns family! | Happy 80th!! xoxo, Elizabeth | I can't believe my baby cousin is turning 80. I'm sending you a big hug and kiss and wish you a happy birthday. I'm waiting for a knock at my door and see you standing there with your red carry on! You are always welcome here. Love to all, Audrey

What would my life be like without Susan I cannot imagine. She has introduced me to the finer things in life, like the Chinese banquet restaurant where for under three dollars you can eat everything on the buffet table, and of course she showed me THE DOLLAR STORE. Only Susan can shop Marshalls and find a $1200 suit for $39.95 in my size. She is my style maven in all things because we are the same size!!! I love you. Joan M. | Dearest Susan, You are the perfect role model for your family and friends. I am so honored to be on the list of friends. Please note that I have adhered to all of the wholesome advice given to me including shopping at the Dollar Store. Love and hugs, Sandy

Dear Promenade 108 North: Just like the Queen Mother in the Buckingham Palace Billiards Room-- you sure gave this place some class! Thanks and Happy Birthday! Love, Adele, Jill, + Agatha the Cat 113 North | Happy Birthday Sue, I feel blessed to have you as a friend, even when you're cussing me out for not being in touch, I always know I can depend on you if I ever need help. When I describe you to others words like Tough, Stubborn, and Pushy come to mind but I always end with Caring, Classy, Advocate for Children, Fair, Honest, Integrity and a great Friend and kindred spirit. Happy Birthday. My family and I love you. --Lenyse | Sue dear, You had me at hello via a blind phone call that went on for ninety minutes and sealed our fate decades ago. I felt then as I have for all these years that we are birds of a feather. You are stylish, irresistible, amazing, confounding, commanding, caring ,generous, and ever a font of wisdom. You are the perfect friend! My heartfelt loving wishes for a joyful birthday! Love, Harriet | Hey Sue, So you're the big 8-0. Have a wonderful time with your family! In the grand scheme of things, we have only known each other for a short time but I'm so happy to have you as one of my (crazy) friends. :) Have a great birthday and I'll see you when you get back. Gaye

To amazing and wise woman--wishing you a fabulous 80th birthday! love, Ofer, Ximena & Eleanor | Sue, We met in 1953 at a Junior Ladies Auxiliary meeting at Barnert Hospital. Little did I know, or understand at that time, how you would influence my life and the way that I would live it. You and David, as I, finally, told you on the beach in St. Thomas, made me the person that I am today. Your friendship and strength of purpose taught me how to stand up and to take charge of personal matters that I still didn't understand at that time. When I, finally, understood the whys and wherefores of my life before you and David entered into it I then had the strength, both mentally and physically, to really get my life going on a straight path. Everything that I did from that time on was the result of what you and David taught to me and encouraged me to do. I love being your friend and confidant and, God willing, it will continue for many years to come! HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (and I love your hair!) June

Sue, Life moves too swiftly. At this stage, it is time for us to enjoy every day, party hearty, and forgive and forget old grudges. Stay strong, well, and happy. We love you and miss you. Iris and Bill | Dear Sue, Wishing you the best birthday ever! You are so thoughtful and giving of yourself; always ready to help. I shall never forget how you were there for me when I fell, taking me to the doctor bringing me dinners, etc. You are fun and unpredictable, especially when we go out to dinner! I am so glad we met in the cleaners. Just keep on traveling and running as long as you can! It is wonderful having you for a friend>>>> It must be our Jersey blood that brought us together! I am looking forward to many more good times. Enjoying celebrating with your family. Happy Birthday! Love, Judy M | Sue was always my "Auntie Mame" and I have loved and appreciated her friendship for over 30 years. I always told her I wanted to be her when I grew up. Sue, I wish you a very happy birthday and many returns of the day. Rhona | Sue, my dear, I simply cannot believe this will be your 80th birthday! We have been friends for a very long time and I do regret we could not meet up in Charlotte last month. Do enjoy every one of your friends and family who are able to gather with you. Joe says hi. When you blow out all those candles, we will be with you in spirit. Love you a lot. Jacqui

When people hear how Sue and I met, the shocked and amazed expression on their faces speaks volumes. And, when they realize that we have been friends for almost 40 years, the amazement with contentment continues. Well in case you are one of the few that don’t know our story. Sue and I met when she decided that the truth should be known that my husband was having an affair with her neighbor. Her honesty has always been one of the principles that you love (or sometimes grit your teeth) about Sue. That revelation obviously could have made us dreaded enemies or friends. You can guess the outcome! Sue has been a great friend and confidant. She became the God mother for my daughter, Jocelyn. And, through my marriage to the person she revealed, she never for a moment shirked her responsibilities. Can you imagine that baptism? You could feel a slight tremor in the church. Sue loved my father. They both loved to dance. And once again, she made her feelings known how she felt about him even in the presence e of my Mom. We laughed and laughed in humor yet knowing that she was dead serious. As a friend, Sue is an advocate for your dreams. When I dabbled into the cosmetic business not once but twice, she was always there buying and bringing potential customers my way. Her friends became mine and the opposite was true as well. Who could forget that snowy New Year’s Eve in Paterson, when the new teenager bedazzled us in a revealing hot red baby doll negligee? Here we were bringing in the New Year with my dear elderly Bermuda friends, Auntie and Daddy Harry, and there was Jill in red, looking hot yet so innocent with her baby face. We laughed and still continue to enjoy that moment. Sue saved my life. She ensured that I received medical care from dear Uncle Ben. My body felt like rigor mortis had set in. Every move was excruciatingly painful and it was difficult to breathe. She came to Nutley, clothed me, and took me immediately to see Uncle Ben. He in turn saw that I had immediate medical attention for a massive blood clot. In the matter of a few hours, I was in the hospital and my daughter was scooped up and taken care of as well. Countless trips to St. Thomas with wonderful memories; Sue will talk to anybody. On one such occasion we met this wonderful lady, Hazel, at Magen’s Bay. Here we are in our best model pose. Rumor has it that this chance meeting turned into a business opportunity for Sue. Once again, she showed her willingness to help and support the aspirations of others. Sue, wish I could be in CA with you and yours. Especially since Donny will be there. You know he is my secret love! Enjoy your visit, come back to the east coast soon and here’s to more years of laughter, tears and fun!!! | When people hear how Sue and I met, the shocked and amazed expression on their faces speaks volumes. 22: Dear Sue: You are the youngest 80 year old I know, but it's still very old, and I am right behind you! I remember your house on E.42nd St. "Uncle Al," Goldie and Nana. Yours was the only house I knew that had a pool in the backyard. I remember you singing "Lost on the Market Street Circle" in our PTA. Show.you brought down the house. | I remember when you closed the boutique in the islands. You came to stay with us for a few days and we had to take 2 cars to the airport to pick you up because you brought twelve pieces of luggage...one of them filled to the brim with the same boot in different sizes. I remember when Alan and I tried to "fix you up" with a good friend...an attorney who was also a wine taster for a magazine...he had spent the afternoon tasting and managed to fall asleep after our dinner together...he woke the next day and told his son that he THOUGHT he had met a terrific lady the night before. Alan calls you our submarine friend because every once in a while you surface....and when you do, what fun!! What's next???? I love you a lot! Happy birthday. Arlene

Happy Birthday, Sue, Wow !!! It seems impossible to think that you are now 80 years old. Why only 60 years ago my family moved down the street from your family on East 42nd Street. I remember looking up to you in awe. Then years later we became friends and I had the pleasure of teaching your children, sharing your hospitality in your gracious home, and having fun rehearsing PTA shows and working on political campaigns. Those were wonderful days that will always have a special place in my heart. I am so glad that we have renewed the friendship and see each other when you’re in “this part of town”. Have a fabulous birthday and I wish you many, many more filled with good health, happiness and love! You’ll be in my thoughts and heart on November 5. Love, Ina P.S. Bill sends his love as well!

Dear Sue, Best wishes for another 20-PLUS healthy, happy years. Love, Hilda and Joe

Dear Sue, Milestones. It's all in the NUMBERS...and pictures... | 68 Surviving some 68 years of knowing each other, having total recall of our children's and grandchildren's names and remaining good friends. | 4 Blessed 4X's over with the most wonderful children! | 8 Those blessings exploded exponentially to the love of eight beautiful grandchildren! | Life is a gift and you certainly have and are living it to the fullest. And here you are, the maitre de ...oops, I mean the matriarch of the family..front and center on this day and everyday! Have the best birthday ever!!!!!!!
