Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God! Mark 10:14

On Monday, April 23, 2012, I noticed that Laila was not moving as vigorously as she has been. I told my mother and she suggested I go to the hospital if it persisted. The next day, my doctor told me to come in. After discovering my amniotic fluid was low, I was sent immediately to triage for testing. That night, I was told that I only had 4 ounces of amniotic fluid, but was supposed to have 8oz. Even though I showed no signs of leakage, I would be admitted for further testing in the morning. Wednesday, I was seen by my doctor as well as a high risk obstetrician who informed me that I would be on hospital bed rest until I delivered. I was so nervous because I wasn't due for another 3 months! I was given the 1st of 2 doses of steroid shots to speed up the growth of my daughter's lungs in the event of an early birth.

Thursday morning, April 26th, I had another ultrasound as planned. About 2 minutes into the screening, the ultrasound technician said she'd be right back. Within seconds, my hospital room was filled with nurses and doctors. As I tried to comprehend what just happened, my doctor took one look at the ultrasound and said, "Ms. Roe, we have to take this baby NOW!" Chris was told to go to the waiting room, I prayed silently, and I was whisked off for an emergency C-Section. And this is where our 3month journey began!

After I woke up and was placed in a room, I was calm, but wondered about my daughters health. I was visited by the case worker who gave me some great information and then the lactation nurse who prepared me for breastfeeding. I still hadn't seen my princess and wanted to get her to me, then I received a call from Laila's doctor in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)........

She told me that Laila had to be coded and resuscitated because she was born with no heartbeat. She was then placed on the ventilator to help her weak lungs function. Laila also had liver damage due to the trauma of the birth and had to receive several blood transfusions. Lastly, Laila had a grade 4 brain bleed, the most severe bleed in preemies. She would be getting frequent head ultrasounds to monitor the damage.... ......But I know PRAYER works!

 That first look......

 ...at God's miracle!

As I did while still pregnant, every night, we read Laila a story.....

Laila had several more transfusions throughout the weeks. Her liver was getting better, and the bleed had stopped. However, the blood matter that was now clotted, was blocking the spinal fluid from draining properly. To give it time to break down, Laila would have to have a Ventricular Access Device (VAD) implanted in her head to trap the excess spinal fluid that was building up and causing pressure to her brain. Every day, the doctors would then manually drain the fluid. IF after a while the clots did not break down and the fluid was still building, she would have to have a Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt inserted in her head to drain the spinal fluid to her stomach for re-absorption. This is when we were introduced to Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta: Scottish Rite!

 Surgery went successful!!! | Strength

 ...And Laila Got Better

After weeks of tapping the VAD, things changed. Her weekly ultrasounds showed her ventricles getting bigger meaning the fluid was no longer draining. We had to act! With one phone call, Laila was scheduled for transport back to Childrens HealthCare of Atlanta for the final surgery.

After a successful surgery, and an extra week back at the hospital, Laila has been doing everything she needs to do! I roomed in Friday and on Saturday,July 28, 2012, a 5lb 1oz Laila was discharged from the NICU off all monitors!!

 Memories

This whole experience has been hard. The countless days and nights running back and forth to the hospital, having to see my little girl go through all she did, constantly fighting for her life did something to me. While I broke down on the outside, my mind and spirit were at peace. After the c-section, while I was in the recovery room, a nurse asked me if I was ok. I said, yes ma'am. She said, "You seemed abnormally calm during the whole situation." I looked up at her and said, "I was praying the whole time!"

I will never say, "Lord, why me!" Throughout this whole process, God was showing me that it's all about HIM, and the sooner you have FAITH, the sooner you will make it out! Although it was definitely a journey, I cherish the ride. See, my precious Laila not only had me praying the hardest I have ever prayed, people who don't even pray for themselves were praying for my daughter and witnessing the works HE was doing with her. I thank God for blessing me with a child that blessed others. I also, thank my village for their support and prayers! Continue to have faith, and watch what GOD will do for YOU! XOXO, Kijonna
