FC: Lawrence Joseph Jacobs 80th Birthday Memory Book
This Memory Book is presented to Lawrence Joseph Jacobs on the occasion of your 80th Birthday March 14, 2010
In the Beginning | Herman and Eleanor (Mehring) Jacobs Wedding Photograph Married June 16, 1925 at St Francis Church in Portage des Sioux Eleanor Wright was born August 11, 1898 in New York and came to Missouri on an orphan train. She was adopted by Dr. Peter and Marie (Lyons) Mehring and her name was changed to Eleanor Mehring. Herman James Jacobs was born February 9, 1878 and was a carpenter by trade. Eleanor was a housewife. When they married she was 26 years old and he was 47 years old. They had 5 children in 8 years, the third of which was Lawrence Joseph Jacobs, born March 14, 1930 in Portage Des Sioux, Missouri. | Herman and Eleanor
Baby Lawrence Joseph | Lawrence was born at home in Portage des Sioux in a house that sits about 300 feet off of LeSieur Street and backs up to Saucier Street. The day he was born there were eleven inches of snow on the ground. | Baby Lawrence in high chair | Lawrence around age 1
Toddler Days | Pictured Top from left are Marge (Lyons) Byrd holding Eleanor, Eugene, Hubert and Lawrence on Helen (Lyons) lap. Eleanor was very close to the Lyons children (her nieces and nephews): Joseph, Eugene, Helen, Marge, and Mary Agnes because she raised them after her adopted sister Marie and her husband James died. Pictured below is Eleanor (Mom) with Lawrence on tricycle, Hubert in the car, Eleanor on small trike and Eugene in wagon.
Dipping in the Mississippi | Pictured here in the water are Eugene, Hubert and Lawrence with Orben Byrd in swim suit. On bank is Mary Kay and Eleanor. Living so close to the Mississippi River they were in it a lot. When they got older Lawrence and his brothers would go skinning dipping in the Mississippi River so their parents wouldn't know they had been swimming in the river. In the winter the river would freeze and they could walk all the way across the river to the Illinois side.
Parents, Brothers and Sisters | This picture is of Lawrence (in the black shorts) with his Mother Eleanor, who is holding his baby sister Mary Kay, his younger sister Eleanor and his older brother Hubert in front of their house in Portage. This picture is special because it is a picture with his Mom Eleanor. | This is a closeup of Lawrence around age 4 with his hand on the baby carriage holding baby sister Mary Catherine (Mary Kay). Little sister Eleanor is looking at Mary Kay and next to her is older brother Hubert. Eugene (Jake) is cut off in this picture.

Grade School Graduation | Lawrence graduated from St. Francis Catholic Grade School. From the 4th grade on he was an altar boy at St. Francis Church and once thought seriously about becoming a priest. Maybe that's why Joyce calls him Father John. There were ten children in his 8th grade graduating class. From there he went on to St. Peters High in St. Charles, Missouri and graduated from there in 1948. In 1956 when a larger Catholic high school was needed a new school was built at the current location on Elm Street and named Duchesne High School. St. Peter High was the predecessor to Duchesne High school where all of Lawrence's children and six of his grandchildren have gone to high school. | Lawrence as an adolescent | Lawrence 8th Grade Graduation
Young Man and High School Graduate | Lawrence graduated from St. Peters High School in St. Charles, Missouri on June 3, 1948. During his sophomore year on October 14, 1946, his Mother Eleanor passed away at home from a cerebral hemorrhage. | Lawrence in Cap and Gown | Lawrence's Senior Pictures
Bachelor Days | Bill Powers, Hubert and Lawrence at a Saturday night dance wearing hats. Bill and Lawrence worked together on a hay baling crew. Hubert, Bill and Lawrence ran around together a lot. They would go out on Wednesday night after work and went to dances on Saturday night. At one of the dances at Orchard Farm was where he first noticed Joyce Schrader his future bride. A few dances later at a Portage dance they danced a lot and he asked to take her home. The rest is history. | This picture was taken April 22, 1950, the night before Eugene and Rose (Forster) Jacobs Wedding. Pictured left to right are Hubert, Marion (Rose's Sister), Eleanor, Mary Kay, Rose (Rosie), Lawrence behind Rosie, Larnie Leclaire, Bill Powers, and Bob Powers.

Hi Lawrence, Happy 80th Birthday! I see you as a great family man, a dedicated and loving husband and father. You and Joyce have raised a wonderful family. You were a success at your job. You are always cheerful and fun to be around. You should be very proud of your accomplishments. May God bless you in every way. Gerry | Lawrence, Happy 80th Birthday. I just want to tell you what a special brother-in-law you have been. I can't thank you enough for everything that you did for mom and dad, especially the years they were sick and you helped take care of them. Not once did I ever hear you complain. Mom and Dad loved you like a son. Also I want to thank you for being such a wonderful husband to my sister, and a wonderful father. Hope you have many more happy birthdays, and thank you again for being a wonderful brother-in-law and friend. Don | Dad, You mean the world to me and I am so glad we can be here to celebrate your 80th birthday with you. You have been the best father to me. You have always been there to give advice, support and love and not afraid to get after me when I was wrong. I admire your work ethic and your sense of family and your and Mom’s example of faith in God. You and Mom have always made us feel how loved we are. You are the best Grandpa to my girls and you are ageless! For all that you are I am glad I was chosen to be your daughter. Love, Lana Aka Baby Booter and Moose | Dear Grandpa, Happy 80th Birthday! You always do so much for us and we love spending time with you! Thanks for everything you’ve done for us, and for everything you’ll do in the future! Love, Nicole
Lawrence you are a wonderful brother and a very good friend as well. We love playing golf with you and Joyce and also pinochle. Larry and I have had some really good times with you and Joyce. Happy, Happy Birthday to you, Love, Larry and Mary Kay | Lawrence, When it comes to a brother you have been the best. Always there for me, when I was young and still to this day. You have been a great brother. Your sister Eleanor | Dear Dad, From the first day I met you, you've made me feel welcome in your home. Over the years, I have greatly enjoyed the time we've spent together, whether we've been playing golf, debating management philosophies, or just watching sports on television. You've been everything I could have wished for in a father-in-law. Enjoy your 80th birthday. Maybe now you'll "act your age!" (Just kidding). Your Favorite Son-in-Law, Bill | Grandpa, Thank you for being my Godfather. I like to visit you in St. Louis. Happy Birthday! Love, Katie | Grandpa, I love you very much! Happy Birthday Hannah
Lawrence, It's hard for me to believe that you are going to be 80 very soon. It seems like just a few short years ago that I met you. I was at a dance in St. Peters and everyone was looking out the window (the dance was on the second floor) and I looked also and saw a blue car in a deep ditch. The top of the car was just about even with the street. I asked who that was and someone said, “That's Larnie Jacobs in the ditch”. I believe someone with a tractor pulled your car out. After that, you came up to the dance and you and Gerald Rothermich cut in on my friend Marilyn and me, but you asked Marilyn to dance and I danced with Gerald. The next week I was at a dance at the Portage Hall and I danced with you and you asked to take me home. That was the beginning of a very long and beautiful romance. I guess February 13, 1954 was the happiest day of my life and November 25th, January 4th, April 4th and November 10th were very special days to both of us when each of our kids were born. Now we have 11 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way. I think I could have looked the world over and not found a better husband than you are. I thank God for the wonderful years we have had together and God willing, we will share many more. Thank you Lawrence for being such a good husband and father. I love you very much. Happy 80th Birthday dear. Joyce
