13 And regarding the question, friends, that has come up about what happens to those already dead and buried, we don't want you in the dark any longer. First off, you must not carry on over them like people who have nothing to look toward to, as if the grave were the last word. 14 Since Jesus died and broke loose from the grave, God will most certainly bring back to life those who died in Jesus. 15 And then this: We can tell you with complete confidence-we have the Master's word on it-that when the Master comes again to get us those of us who are still alive will not get a jump on the dead and leave them behind. In actual fact, they'll be ahead of us. 16 The Master himself will give the command. Archangel thunder! God's trumpet blast! He'll come down from heaven and the dead in Christ will rise-they'll go first. 17 Then the rest of us who are still alive at the time will be caught up with them into the clouds to meet the Master. 18 Oh, we'll be walking on air! And then there will be one huge family reunion with the Master. So reassure one another with these words. | 1 Thessalonian 4: 13-18 (The Message)

Remembering Pathfinders from 1979 to 1991 As I begin my journey through the fertile lands of Pathfindering, I must pause to give honor and respect to those upon whose platform I built. My honorable colleagues include Elder Lee Paschal, Sr. who is the “patriarch” and founder of pathfinders in the Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. He passed the baton on to Elder E. Wayne Shepherd in 1966. Elder Shepherd passed the Baton on to Elder Randolph Stafford in 1973. Elder Stafford passed the baton on to Elder Glenn Howell who in turn passed it on to yours truly in March of 1979. It was during this time that pathfinders really exploded in the Conference. It was our goal to establish a pathfinder club in every church. Many churches responded to the challenge for which we were grateful. Pathfinders became the place to be. Winter Camps and Polar Bear Camping was always exciting, enabling us to put our camping skills to test. Spring Camporees brought most of our clubs to Lone Star Camp. It was here that clubs got a chance to demonstrate their uniquenesses, participate in various competitions of which the Drilling and Marching was always the most popular. This event always happened during the first week of Campmeeting and many of the saints came to Campmeeting to give their physical support for our pathfinders. Another popular event during the Spring Camporee was the pathfinder parade through the grounds of Lone Star Camp. It was thrilling to see the people line up with great anticipation along the parade route to see the young people parade for God. The pathfinders also participated in witnessing in the city of Athens and to parts of its community. I personally visited with the proper authorities and was given permission for our Pathfinders to hold an annual parade in the City of Athens, Texas. This was the beginning of pathfinder parades in the City of Athens. We made the front page of the local newspaper several times. It was a great witnessing event. Literature was passed out along the parade route and people we met were extended an invitation to come and visit us at our Campmeeting at Lone Star Camp. Spring Camporee was the ‘go to” to event of the year. I enjoyed it immensely. It was also a joy for the pathfinders of Southwest Region to participate in the only two North American Division Camporees. One being the “We Are His Hands” Camporee that was held in Camp Hale, Colorado in 1985; and the other being “We Are His Colors” Camporee that was held in Mt. Union, Pennsylvania in 1989. There were over 30,000 pathfinders at each of these camporees. These events exposed our clubs to the vastness, uniqueness and diversity of pathfinders. These events also opened their minds to new ideas to implement in their own clubs. Of course, nothing took the place of the many new friendships that were formed. I will forever be grateful for being a part of these events. As I come to an end of meandering down pathfinder lane, I must conclude in saying that nothing was more important to me than to see the spiritual effects that pathfinders had on our young people. Many are in the church today because of their having been a member of a pathfinder club. Some are in leadership positions directly related to their being a pathfinder. Thank God for the Pathfinder Organization! In May of 1991, it was my privilege and honor to pass the baton of Pathfindering to Elder James Black who is now the Pathfinder Director for the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. May God continue to bless the pathfinders of the great Southwest Region Conference. They are awesome! Elder Billy E. Wright

Pastor James L. Black, Sr. is a native of Savannah, Georgia. He is a graduate of Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) with a Major in Theology and a Minor in Biblical Languages. He also attended the Andrews University Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, MI. Pastor Black began his ministry in the Southwest Region Conference where he served as youth pastor and senior pastor. He served as conference youth ministries director from 1991-2000. His responsibilities included teens, young adults, pathfinders, adventurers, singles, camp ministries, and National Servicemen Organization. During this same period he served as a member of the North American Division Youth Executive Committee and Secretary for the North American Division Pathfinder Committee. He also served 4 years as president of the Black Adventist Youth Directors Association (BAYDA). This group is responsible for planning a United Youth Congress every four years. He is the author and publisher of two books Hey Youth! Preach the WORD!!! and God's Got a Plan and I’m In It! Currently, he is serving as Youth & Young Adult Ministries Director for the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Many youth initiatives have been launched and training resources developed under his leadership. Pastor Black is married to Maxine and they have 3 grown children; James Jr., Raquel (husband William & daughter Elyse), and Stefani. He enjoys fishing, golfing, biking, boating, horses, camping, and motorcycles. Pastor Black lives to show young people that JESUS truly is the WAY. His favorite quote: "The quality of your preparation will determine the quality of your performance."

After my military experience, I knew God had something special for the training He had allowed me to received. I came to Fort Worth in 1979 and was asked to take the Pathfinder Club in 1981. | Elder Rogers Johnson Pathfinder Director 1993 - Present

. This was an exciting time for me to see what God would do. We took the club from about 8 pathfinders and grew it to 53 members in about 2 years. God's grace is sufficient, and alone with pathfinders and family members, we were able to baptize over 150 wonderful souls into God's remnant church. I really enjoyed working with young people and watching them grow and develop into laborers for Christ. Our method of evangelism was in the park and neighborhood where we would drill, and invite other youth to join us. We had the privilege of joining several local clubs and went on numerous adventures. We performed with City Temple under the leadership of Ronald Thibodeaux in trips to Weatherford , Mineral Wells, Cleburne State Park, and Denton. Cleburne club joined with us, as well as Waxahachie and Garland. In 1993 I was asked by Pastor Black to become the Conference Coordinator. I really didn't know what this entailed, but I agreed to accept the position. During the next few years we were able to do great things for the expansion of God's cause. We took 7 buses on a 14 day tour to Calgary Alberta, Canada. During that trip, Pastor Black had to return to Texas because of a tragedy, and I was left in charge of the entire group in Canada. That was the first time that I realized the magnitude of the job of Conference Area Coordinator. In the next few years we took over 500 pathfinders to Nasa Bahamas, as well as Santa Fe Mew Mexico for a Ski Trip. We have made four trip to Oshkosh WI. for the international camporee. I have had the awesome opportunity to serve under several Youth Directors. Those include Pastor Langston Sylvester, Pastor Keith Gray, and presently pastor Roger Wade. Under those administrations we started numerous clubs, and grew other existing clubs. We have attended Youth Rallies, local Youth congresses, United Youth Congress, National B.A.Y.D.A. Camporee, and other many events. During a lag period between Youth Directors we took upon ourselves to take over 500 youth to Ocha Rios Jamaica. This was a very successful and enjoyable trip, thanks to our administrative assistant Ms Lulleither Messiah. God's vision for the pathfinders have never changed. We are still called to take "this message to all the world in this generation. Our present vision is to see an ARMY OF YOUTH RIGHTLY TRAINED. We will do this by constantly keeping the vision alive, being actively involved in clubs that are already started as well as start new ones. We look forward to a future that is directed by God and completed by brave leaders and well developed pathfinders.
