The Christmas Season in Germany By: Jessica Turner
Germany celebrates Christmas differently than America does.
In Germany, they call Santa Claus St. Nikolaus and he comes twice a year. He comes on December 5th and December 24th. December 6th is St. Nikolaus day and December 25th is Christmas.
On December 5th before children go to bed they put their shoes outside their doors. If they have been good, St. Nikolaus will fill them with candies, cookies, and fruit. If they have been bad, he will leave a stick in their shoe.
All I want for Christmas is ...
In Germany, to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season they have Advent calendars. They begin on December 1st and end on December 24th. On each calendar there is a door with each day on it. Behind every door is a gift and the two biggest gifts are on the 6th and 24th.
When the Christmas season begins, people from Germany put out their Advent wreaths. The wreaths have four candles that are lit every Sunday for the four Sundays before Christmas. A different person from the family lights one candle each Sunday.
When St. Nickolaus comes, he has a book of who has been good and bad. He carries a sack of presents and a rod. If you have been good, he gives you presents. If you have been bad, he gives you the rod. So, even in Germany you need to be good in order to get presents on Christmas.
