The Beginning of Wrestling! | – Wrestling is one of the oldest sports known. It can be traced back to cave paintings in France over 15,000 years old! The first recorded wrestling match occurred during the Olympics in 708 BC. Wrestling was very popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans.
(YEAR) | (COACH NAMES) | There are different types of wrestling. Among these different styles, Greco-roman, free style, and folk wrestling are the most popular. In high school and college, wrestlers must wrestle in a modified folk style. There are slight difference in rules and regulations between high school wrestling and collegiate wrestling. In each style of wrestling there are certain weight classes. Each wrestler must make the desired weight class and cannot be over. If they are over they must move to the next higher weight class.
Two wrestlers in neutral position | This is Referee position
The object of wrestling is to pin your opponent. Wrestlers have three 2 minute periods to do this. In college the first period is 3 minutes. The first period both opponents start in “neutral” position. Both wrestlers are on their feet in this position. Once the referee blows the whistle you begin wrestling. During the match there are three positions wrestlers can start in during the next two periods; bottom or referee position and top. On bottom your opponent is on top of you with one hand on the elbow and one hugging your waist. Top position is when you are on top of your opponent.
In wrestling to score points you need to get a take down, an escape, or get your opponent to their back or a reversal. A take down is getting your opponent from neutral position to the mat. You are awarded two points for every take down.
An escape is when the defensive wrestler gets completely out of the offensive wrestlers control. An escape is worth one point. | A reversal is when the defensive wrestler switches and makes the offensive wrestler now defensive. This is worth two points. Back points or near fall points are awarded by holding your opponent in a pinning move without actually getting his shoulders to the matt. There are different point values depending on how long the person is in the move.
There are several ways to win a wrestling match. The most commonly known way is by fall, or pin. The wrestler must have their opponent's shoulders or shoulder blades touching the mat. This awards you team 6 points. Another way is by technical fall. You must get 15 points over your opponent. 5 points are awarded to your team. A win by major decision is having a margin of points greater than 8. 4 points are awarded to team score. A win by default is winning by a margin of less than 8 points. The team score gets 3 points. Lastly a win by forfeit, a wrestler did not have an opponent at that specific weight class therefore the team with the wrestler at that weight class gets 6 points awarded to their team score.
