2: Castaways and rejects - Broken words Lost notions Forgotten technology Discarded love Abandoned dreams What If Coulda beens Staci looks for beauty in the forsworn and wondrous in the mundane. She conveys this in her artwork through the use of found objects and iconic imagery. Her work transforms the ordinary into extraordinary. You can frequently find her crouched on the side of the road with camera in hand or collecting the detritus of day-to-day life. She's finding inspiration as the world drives by. Staci is a painter, photographer, and fiber artist, combining all of her artistic pursuits as one expression since 2006. Her paintings convey an emotional intensity with a non-figurative aesthetic. Staci's method of creation emphasizes spontaneous or subconscious composition while being influenced by the text used in each piece. The photographs or illustrations used in each piece are selected based on the text in the background and are applied as high contrast black and white images. Originally from London and Somerset, Kentucky, Staci has lived in Lexington for fourteen years. She lives with her husband of nine years, who is a computer wizard, wood turner and superhero, their six-year-old daughter, a fairy princess ballerina and a roly-poly baby girl. Staci is an adjudicated artist of the State of Kentucky. Her work is displayed in exhibits and art shows nationally. | 2

4: The love of words. The use of old book pages started with my love of the written word. I love books. I love to read them. I love the look and feel of them. I love the way they age. I even love the smell of them. These pieces spring from a desire to bring the written word into my art. The books I use are “rescued” books. Books that were destined for the landfill or to be recycled. The pieces are self-limiting because of that, but at the same time I work to make phrases within the text significant to each piece and each one’s name is chosen from the text. These books are shown a great deal of respect as they are altered. My mixed media pieces have a minimum of nine layers of brushwork on each piece. I start by covering the work surface with the book pages. I then apply multiple layers of acrylic wash. When this background is complete, I apply textural elements such as fiber, sand, or gel mediums. My original photographs or graphic illustrations are then transferred. The photographs are high contrast images which add stark imagery frequently in discordance with the layers of background color. This juxtaposition is important in my work. Detail work is done with ink, pastels, and paint. Additional focal elements such as beads, vintage pieces, or found objects are applied to complete each piece. I hope that my pieces draw you in to read the text and discover the details. Staci McKnight Maney 2012 | 4
