FC: THE MAZE RUNNER | By James Dashner
A | Antagonist The creators, the people who made the maze and sent the Gladers there
B Books | Thomas gets sent to a maze with no memory. He has to survive and help the others that were already there survive and eventually escape.
C Climax | Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck go down the griever hole while the other Gladers are fighting off the grievers. Thomas must put the codes he found from the pattern of the maze into the computer to turn off the grievers and have a way out.
D Description of main characters | Thomas- strong, hard worker, very determined Newt- caring, strong, leader Minho- self-aware, devoted, honest Chuck- care-free, young, talkative
E | Exposition | Thomas wakes up in a box and can't remember anything. When he's pulled out of the box he is surrounded by a group of about 40 boys. He is in a big space with a great, stone wall around them. There are many shabby-looking buildings. He discovers he is in what they call the Glade, which is in the center of a huge stone maze. It is there he meets the other gladers and they inform him what is happening.
F Figurative Language | In chapter 3 the phrase "The fear was like icy dew on his skin." is a simile In chapter 19 "Whirrrr click-click-click whirrrrr click-click-click" is onomatapia In chapter 19 "The anticipation of trying to guess it's next move was killing Thomas." this is an example of a hyperbole
G Give an alternate ending | "The Maze Runner" was filled with many twists and turns that could've lead to many different endings. In one alternate ending that this book could've had, was if when Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck made it into the Griever Hole, it was a trap that led them to a sudden death giving them false hope of a way out. If this was the ending it would mean that the Creators were evil and didn't care what happened to them and just used them for amusement. This would mean the changing were just made up thoughts to turn them against one another. Also' it would mean the other gladers fighting the grievers for Thomas would've lost their lives trying to save the gladers.
H Heart to heart | Dear Thomas, I understand you are in a compromising position, and I am writing to give you some advice on what you should do. As you learn that the end is near, you are put in a challenging predicament. If i was in your situation, I would be sure to never give up. It may be hard to do, but you need to trust the people closest to you with your problems because they will be able to help. You especially need to trust Teresa because you'll need her help most. Through everything you have to endure, persevere and don't give up. Trust your get and go with your first instinct. This will help you be more confident and self-aware. Sincerely, Kelsey Kendrick
I really enjoyed my book, "The Maze Runner". I would highly recommend it to any teen. There are many reasons why this book is a must read. The first reason is all the main characters are teenagers, so it's easier to relate to. Another reason why this is a must read is because there is never a dull moment. All throughout the book, there are many twists and turns, and many things get revealed to you, not just in the climax. I also liked that there were so many unique personalities and characteristics in each of the characters. It made it more interesting to see how they interacted with each other and how they deal with certain situations. This book was one I never wanted to put down. Every teen should read this book. | J Justify
K Know your book | 1. Q) How does the fact that the gladers use their own slang terms affect the readers view of them? A) It really shows that the gladers established their own little village. They had adapted to living on their own, away from the outside world by even creating words and their own meaning. 2.Q) Why does Thomas' relationship with Chick motivate him to get out of the maze? A) Chuck is like a little brother to Thomas as their relationship develops. Thomas grows to really care for him and Chuck tells him he doesn't think anything good waits for him at home. He wondered if he had parents missing him. Thomas is convinced he has a family that misses Chuck and promises him that he would get him home to them.
3.Q) Why did the Creators send Teresa, the only girl, to the Glade to trigger the end? A) Thomas needed Teresa's help. She motivated him to figure out the maze. 4.Q) What was the purpose of Teresa and Thomas being able to communicate telepathically? A) It showed they were connected in a way that none of the other gladers were. They were also able to communicate ideas without others knowing. 5.Q) Why did the gladers make sure to run the glade so neat, organized, and disciplined? A) They were selected because they were the smartest kids the Creators could find. This played a part by showing they're wise enough to be responsible. They liked order and the leaders made sure to discipline to keep that order. 6.Q) What was the purpose of the whole experiment? A) It was a way to find out who might be able to find a solution to the Flares. It was meant to discover the most intelligent young adults/teenagers. 7.Q) What does Ben's banishment show about to leaders? A) They are very serious about order. It shows that they are well disciplined.
8.Q) Why did Gally hate Thomas so much? A) Gally felt like Thomas would end up bringing all of the gladers to their doom. He also had been through the changing and remembered Thomas from before the Glade, which made him cautious about him. 9.Q) What does he fact that Thomas wouldn't leave Alby and went in after him and Minho, even though it was against the rules, say about his character? A) It shows that Thomas is caring and puts others first. It also shows that he will risk his life and suffer the consequences for breaking the rule to try to save someone else. 10.Q) Why was it so important that no one goes out of the maze at night? A) It was extremely dangerous because the grievers came out and nobody had ever made it a whole night in the maze and lived.
L Lessons learned | One lesson I learned from this book is perseverance and determination. Thomas never gave up on finding a way out of the maze when everyone else gave up. In Thomas' perseverance, he succeeded and ended up getting out of the maze.
M Making personal connections | One personal connection that I was able to make with this book is that when Thomas is faced with struggles he can't give up. When I'm in a hard math class and I don't know how to figure out a problem, I work on it even if I'm frustrated until I get it solved. Another connection is that Newt is always there to encourage Thomas, and when I'm discouraged I always have friends or family to motivate me.
N Narration | The narration in this book is limited omniscient. As Thomas gets to know more, more is also revealed to you, so it's like you're going through the same things together.
O Obituary | Chuck of the Glade, died today. He is survived by his Glade family. Thomas, Minho, Alby, and many others. He was a helper and encourager to Thomas and always tried to see the good in things. He tried to be strong even when it looked the darkest. He was the one to be able to figure out how to enter the code to get them out of the maze.
Thomas is the protagonist, he is the main character and also it is told from his point of view. | P Protagonist
Q Quotes | "I promised him!" he screamed, realizing even as he did that his voice was laced with something wrong. Almost insanity. "I promised I'd save him, take him home! I promised him!" I like this quote because it shows how much Thomas cared for Chuck. It showed that even after all the bad things they went through, he still could care for someone. ("The Maze Runner", Ch. 59)
"You get lazy, you get sad. Start giving up. Plain and simple." This quote shows why the gladers work so hard to keep the Glade running. ("The Maze Runner", Cht.11)
R Resolution | When the gladers make it out of the Grievers hole and into where the Creators are. Then they get rescued.
S Sensory details | "He felt the gales then, sucking into the cyclone so that it blew past him from behind, ripping at his clothes and hair like they were shredded flags caught in a storm." ("The Maze Runner, Cht.47) It's impact is that it makes you feel like your going through what Thomas is going through, it makes it seem more real.
T Top five song list | 1) Never Say Never by Justin Bieber. This song is very inspiring and tells you to never give up. Never say never (never never never) You see I never thought that I could walk through fire I never thought that I could take a burn I never had the strength to take it higher Until I reached the point of no return And there's just no turnin back When your heart's under attack Gonna give everything I have It's my destiny I will never say never (I will fight) I will fight till forever (make it right) Whenever you knock me down I will not stay on the ground Pick it up, pick it up Pick it up, pick it up (up up up...) And never say never 2) Not Afraid by Eminem. This song is about taking a stand against something, and Thomas and the gladers take a stand to the Creators by escaping I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid To take a stand, to take a stand (Yeah, it's been a ride) Everybody, everybody (I guess I had to)Come take my hand, come take my hand(Go to that place to get to this one) We'll walk this world together through the storm(Now some of you)Whatever weather, cold or warm(Might still be in that place)Just lettin' you know that you're not alone(If you're tryin' to get out)Holla if you feel like you've been down the same road(Just follow me, I'll get you there)

It's about how no matter what you go through that's hard, it can only make you stronger. You know the bed feels warmer Sleeping here alone You know I dream in color And do the things I want You think you've got the best of meThink you've had enough the last laughBet you think that everything good is goneThink you left me broken downThink that I'd come running backBaby, you don't know me, 'cause you're dead wrong

This song says that no matter what a person does to you, they can't take all of you and you'll still be able to be yourself. This is how Thomas felt about the Creators.
Days like this I want to drive away Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade You chewed me up and spit me out Like I was poison in your mouth You took my light, you drained me downThat was then and this is nowNow look at me This is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, noThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, noThrow your sticks and stones Throw your bombs and your blowsBut you're not gonna break my soulThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, no I just wanna throw my phone awayFind out who is really there for meYou ripped me off, your love was cheapWas always tearing at the seamsI fell deep and you let me drownBut that was then and this is now Now look at meThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, noThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, noThrow your sticks and stones Throw your bombs and your blows But you're not gonna break my soulThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, no Now look at me, I'm sparklingA firework, a dancing flame You won't ever put me out again You won't ever put me out againI'm glowing, oh woah ohSo you can keep the diamond ringI never liked them anywayIn fact you can keep everythingYeah, yeah Except for me This is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, noThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, no (away from me) Throw your sticks and stonesThrow your bombs and your blowsBut you're not gonna break my soulThis is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, no
 5) Count on Me by Bruno Mars. It is a song about friendship and Thomas' friends are all important to him. If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea I'll sail the world to find you If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see I'll be the light to guide you Find out what we're made ofWhen we are called to help our friends in need You can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be thereAnd I know when I'm neededI can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do If you toss and you turn and you just can't fall asleepI'll sing a song beside youAnd if you ever forget how much you really mean to meEveryday I will remind you Find out what we're made ofWhen we are called to help our friends in need You can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be thereAnd I know when I'm neededI can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do You'll always have my shoulder when you cryI'll never let go, never say goodbye You know you can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be thereAnd I know when I'm neededI can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do You can count on me 'cause I can count on you
U Under cover mission | James Dashner is the author of "The Maze Runner" 1) Born and raised in Georgia 2) lives in Utah 3) married to Lynette Anderson with 4 kids
V Visit your favorite character | Visiting Chuck 1) What did you think when you first woke up in the Glade? I want to know what he was going through and how that experience was for him. 2) Why do you think it's hard for you to fit in anywhere? Chuck has a hard time making friends and i would get to see how that made him feel. 3) What about Thomas makes you so close to him? In the beginning Thomas didn't want anything to do with Chuck, but Chuck kept trying to be his friend. 4) What did you miss most about the life you left behind?
I want to know what he wonders about his old life the most. 5) Why did you decide to go into the Griever hole with Thomas? It'd be very scary to go in there and he decided to anyways.
W Why? | The gladers are very motivated to get out of the maze. They want to get out and get revenge on the creators who sent them there. Some of them have been stuck there for 2 years. They also have no memory, so they want to get out to see what their life was like. Thomas is motivated by his friendship with Chuck. Chuck confides in him how much he misses having a family. Thomas promises to get him home to them. Also, when the end is near, they become desperate for a way out. They knew if they didn't, they would die otherwise. They don't want to be controlled by the creators any more. They want to be free.
X X-Ray | When the gladers went to the griever hole to try to escape, many grievers were there waiting for the gladers to arrive so they could attack the gladers. While the gladers were waiting for something to happen, to try to get past them, Alby decided to go ahead of everybody else and sacrifice himself to try to save the other gladers. He did this because he was seen as the leader of the Glade, and was trying to let the other gladers live. Also, Alby had been through the Changing and he had seen what the world outside of the Glade was like. He didn't want to go back to such a horrific place. He decided it would be better to die trying to save his friends than go back to the real world.
I decided to tell what my favorite part of the book was. My favorite part of "The Maze Runner" was when in chapter 30, Thomas is in the slammer and Chuck comes to visit him. Chuck really opens up to Thomas about his feelings of being homesick. It shows his humanity and how someone can try to make the best of things, even when they are so bad. | Y You
Z Zinger | Minho and Alby went to get the dead griever, but it turned out to just be sleeping, which caused it to attack them. When Thomas say them outside the walls and realized they wouldn't make it to the Glade in time, he decided to risk his life to go into the maze right before the walls closed for the night which was forbidden. It was unexpected because nobody had ever spent the night in the maze and made it out alive and Thomas knew that. It showed a lot about his character that he would risk his life to save 2 people he barley knew. It also caused a disruption with the council since he made it alive.
