55: The Things I Carry by S. Campbell I carry my head lopsided and full of crazy notions, thoughts, like dynamite, exploding from all directions, unannounced and uninvited. My dreams I carry in a pocket, above my heart, I feel them beating in there, in time with my pulse. Memories floating through my veins, circulating and recirculation; I never forget. At times I carry the weight of the world, Some silly burden that weighs me down, that I feel I cannot deal with, until it must be overcome. I carry my heart, it is open and always vulnerable, someday I will put a cage around it, so that it will no longer be able to escape, and leave me chasing after it. I carry guilt, and repentance, sin and fear, love and hate, and an all consuming desire to be the best that I can; to be a good person. The knowledge that you lose some things, and that you never get them back, holds me down and binds me. Self respect and self pity mingle in my back pack, along with books that reflect me, and who I am. I carry pride for myself, and pride for my heritage in my pant pocket, with my car keys and lip balm. Sometimes I carry money, but I am not known for it, nor do I desire to carry it in great bulk, it is usually heavier than it aught to be, and I lose it far too quickly. I carry the things that will carry me through my life, hopes and dreams, emotions and tears, laughter and love.
