45: There seems to be a place, a special magical place where every couple can go and reminisce about their first meeting. Heather and I have Caddies. Caddies is a local sports bar in Bethesda. Caddies is not the typical place for a long-term romance to commence; short-term, maybe. Caddies is where we first met- at least the first of the first times we met. It was a Wednesday night in Autumn and both of us were attending the Social Sports of Bethesda Kickoff Happy Hour for our co-ed football teams. My friend Jeff and I approached Heather and her friend, Ali, in the corner of the bar. Jeff was talking to Ali, giving Heather and I a chance to get to know one another. We talked for about ten minutes and then the inevitable happened, they were off to get another drink. We parted ways. That night Heather was wearing her hair curly, as she does. After that first meeting, we didn’t really run into each other, at least as far as I knew. It was at this time, I started asking my friends if they knew any cute, single girls. My friend Matt had some ideas - he told me to come out for his birthday at Rocket Bar in DC. Matt introduced me to a girl with pretty eyes and straight brown hair. She was energetic and fun. We talked for a few minutes and then the crowd of friends broke us apart. I remember thinking this girl was great and I was excited to see her again. Luckily, a few weeks later, Matt’s brother was having a house party and I attended. As I walked into the house, there she was, the girl with the pretty eyes and straight brown hair. I immediately walked up to her and we started talking. We hung out the whole night. As the night came to an end, we walked back toward the metro and somehow began discussing relationships. She claimed “I have no interest in a boyfriend right now”. A few days later, the girl with the straight brown hair contacted me on Facebook. But remembering her comment, I was in no rush to respond. I waited about five days and finally responded. We talked for a bit and she mentioned she liked playing football and was even part of a league. I told her I was in a league as well (not realizing it, obviously, was the same league) and that my friends play football on the weekends to practice. I invited her to play and she was excited. I now had to call all my friends and convince them to practice on Sunday morning. They complied and Heather came out. Eventually, I figured I would take a shot and ask her out to dinner. Our first date was spent at a local Italian restaurant topped off with homemade s’mores. On the third date, the girl with the pretty eyes and straight brown hair now had beautiful eyes and curly hair. It took a few minutes for me to realize, but in as awkward a moment as I could make, I looked at her and said “Are you that chick from Caddies?!!!”. Heather, of course, replied “Are you serious???”. She knew who I was all along. And the rest is what we call history..
