S: Freddy Fox Takes A Walk By Angleo Eovaldi

This book was originally written by Angelo Eovaldi for his grandchildren. It has been reprinted in honor of Pauline Eovaldi's 90th birthday. It is our sincere hope that future generations will enjoy this story as much as we did when we were children. Love, Gillian, Kara, Megan and Jeff

One morning Mother Fox looked out of the cave. "It is a bright and sunny day," she said to Freddy Fox. "Why don't you go for a walk?" Freddy Fox finished his breakfast cereal. Then he went for a walk. First he walked in the fields. He saw the green grass. He heard a lark singing in the bushes. He smelled the buttercups growing in the meadow. And he saw a strange animal, with long ears and a fuzzy little cottontail. The animal was eating something long and orange, with curly green leaves.

"Hello!' said Freddy. "You are not a fox. Who are you, and what are you eating?" "I'm Robert the Rabbit," said the animal, " and I'm eating a wild carrot. Here, have one." And he gave Freddy a carrot. "Yum, yum!" said Freddy. "This is good. Where did you get it?" "They grow in the fields," said Robert. "I pull them up out of the ground." " I will pull them up to take home to Mother," said Freddy Fox. And he did.

Then Freddy went for a walk in the woods. He saw the tall oak trees. He heard the bluebirds singing in the treetops. He smelled violets growing along the path. And he saw a strange animal with small ears and a long bushy tail. The animal was eating something small and brown. | "Hello!" said Freddy. " You are not a fox. Who are you, and what are you eating?"

" | "I'm Sammy the Squirrel," said the animal, "and I'm eating an acorn. Here, have one." And he gave Freddy an acorn. "Yum, yum!" said Freddy. "This is good. Where did you get it?" "They fall from the tall oak trees," said Sammy. "I pick them up from the ground." "I will pick some up to take home to Mother," said Freddy Fox. And he did. Then Freddy went for a walk along the lake. He saw the waves on the water. He heard the ducks quacking as they flew over. He smelled the water lillies blooming in the lake.

He saw a strange animal with two big flat front teeth and a large flat tail. The animal was eating something green. "Hello!" said Freddy. "You are not a fox. Who are you, and what are you eating?" "I'm Billy the Beaver," said the animal,"and I'm eating bark." "Yum,yum!" said Freddy. "This is good. Where did you get it?" "I pull it from the small trees with my front teeth," said Billy. " I will pull some to take home to Mother," said Freddy. And he did. When he returned to the cave, Freddy gave Mother Fox the carrots, the acorns and the bark. She put them in the pantry. "Did you enjoy your walk?" she said "Yes", said Freddy, "and I met three new friends - Robert, Sammy and Billy.

The next day Mother Fox looked out of the cave. "It is raining,"she said. So Freddy Fox did not take a walk. He and Mother Fox stayed inside and took a long nap. The next day it was sunny again. Mother Fox said, " You can go for a walk today." Freddy ran to the fields. he looked for Robert the Rabbit, but all he could see was a little cottontail sticking out of a bush. "Come out Robert," said Freddy, "and we will gather some carrots." " No, No," said Robert. "My mother told me you are a fox and foxes eat rabbits." | "I don't eat rabbits,"said Freddy, "I eat carrots." But Robert was afraid and would not come out.

Freddy ran into the woods. He saw Sammy high up on a tree branch. "Come down, said Freddy, and we will gather some acorns." "No, No," said Sammy, " My mother told me you are a fox, and foxes eat squirrels." | "I don't eat squirrels," said Freddy. "I eat acorns." But Sammy was afraid and would not come down. Freddy ran to the lake. there he saw Billy swimming in the water. "Come out," said Freddy, "and we will gather some bark." "No, No," said Billy, "my mother told me you are a fox, and foxes eat beavers." "I don't eat beavers,"said Freddy. "I eat bark."

Billy was afraid and swam away. | Freddy Fox ran home and asked his mother, " Do foxes eat rabbits, and squirrels and beavers?" "Bad foxes do," said Mother Fox. " But we are good foxes and would never harm any other animals." Then Freddy went back to the fields and pulled some wild carrots, to the fields to pick up some acorns, and to the lake to pull some bark from the trees. One his way home, he heard someone laughing. Freddy hid behind a tree and peaked.

He saw Robert, Sammy and Billy. They were playing tag, chasing each other around bushes and trees. It looked like a lot of fun, and Freddy wanted to play too. He knew they would run away if they saw him. Then, out from behind a big bush jumped Finky the Fox. With one hand he held Robert by his long rabbit ears. With the other hand he held Sammy by his short squirrel ears. And with one foot he stepped on Billy's beaver tail.

Robert and Sammy and Billy began to cry. They were afraid because they knew that Finky was a bad fox. Finky opened his mouth to bite Robert, but Freddy jumped out and stuck a big carrot in Finky's mouth. "Yum,yum!" said Finky, "I like this. This tastes better than rabbit." He ate the whole carrot. | Then Finky opened his mouth to bite Sammy. But Freddy stuck a big acorn in Finky's mouth. "Yum, yum!" said Finky. "This tastes better than squirrel." And he ate the whole acorn. | Next, Finky opened his mouth to bite Billy. But Freddy stuck a big piece of bark in Finky's mouth. "Yum, yum!" said Finky, "this tastes better than beaver." He ate the whole piece of bark."

"From now on," said Finky, " I will never eat rabbits, or squirrels, or beavers." And he ate all of Freddy's carrots, and acorns, and bark, while Robert and Sammy and Finky ran home. The next day Mother Fox looked out of the cave. "It is a bright and sunny day, "she said, "and look who is coming to see us." Freddy looked outside. He saw Robert, and Sammy, and Billy. Each one was carrying something.

Robert said,"Here is a carrot cake. My mother baked it for you because you saved my life." Sammy said, " Here is an acorn pie. My mother baked it for you because you saved MY life." Billy said, " Here is a dish of bark pudding. My mother baked it for you because you saved MY life." "Thank you," said Freddy Fox. Now we can have a party." So Mother Fox poured some milk, and they all sat down to eat. All of a sudden Freddy saw a long, red tail in the bushes. He knew it was Finky who was now a good fox. "Come out Finky," said Freddy. "Come to the party." Finky Fox came out of the bush. He was carrying a big ripe watermelon. | "I brought something for the party, too," he said. He put the watermelon under the table. Mother Fox brought the plates. First they ate the carrot cake. Then they ate the acorn pie. Then they ate the bark pudding.

Last of all, they ate the big, ripe watermelon. It was the best party Freddy could remember, because he had four new friends - Robert, Sammy, Billy and Finky, the good fox. After the party, they played tag, until mother Fox said it was time for everyone to go home and take a nap. Robert and Sammy and Billy and Finky waved goodbye to Freddy. Freddy and Mother Fox went inside the cave.

Before he went to sleep, Freddy said," I hope it is a sunny day tomorrow, so I can take a walk again."
