2: News Flash! A Cinderella Story Adeline Yen Mah was born into a family of 6 in Tianjin, China. Shortly after she gave birth, Adeline’s mother passed away. When her father remarried, his new wife hated all his children. Adeline went through many hardships and was even sent to two different boarding schools. Even though her parents and family doubted her smarts, she proved them wrong by winning a worldwide playwriting contest. Her story, entitled “Gone with the Locusts,” is about an African girl abducted by bandits. Adeline used the girl to inject her loneliness and in the end, won over many other English-speaking children around the world.
3: Adeline entered the contest during a winter holiday. Every other girl staying at the boarding school “Sacred Heart” was with her family. But, Adeline spent her time off at school since her parents didn’t want her to come home. When reading a magazine, Adeline came across an ad for the contest and with the help of her librarian, she decided to enter. Adeline was sure she lost after not hearing back for a very long time. That is, until her dad called her school and told them he was going to pick her up. Adeline was so surprised. Apparently, she had won and they had announced it in the newspaper! This accomplishment helped convince her dad to let her enroll in college.

6: Dear Diary, Adeline here. Today has been terrible for the most part. At least I won class president! Anyway, the story goes like this: I won the election for 6th grade class president today which was a HUGE accomplishment. I was on top of the world. My best friend, Wu Chun-mei, was running against me as well many other girls. When I stood up to promote Wu Chun-mei’s campaign, she instead promoted me! I was so excited to have won. As usual, I walked home to eagerly tell my family. Cook and Ah-Sun didn’t care, so I went up in my room to finish my calligraphy homework. About 30 seconds later, Ah-Sun came in my room. Apparently, my friends had come to congratulate me! I should’ve been excited, but Niang had given me strict instructions not to have friends over. And even worse, Niang was already home! I forced myself to go see my friends as they shouted “Victory!” and “Surprise!” I knew Niang would be very unhappy. Then Ah-Sun returned and told me that Niang wished to see me now. Slowly, I made my way up to her room and knocked on the door.
7: Niang not-so-politely asked me what these “hooligans” were doing in her house. After trying and trying to convince her that I didn’t invite them over, she told me to “come here.” I dreadfully walked up to her bed and slapped me so hard I almost fell. After hitting me a total of three times, I made my way downstairs to ask my friends to leave. My nose starting bleeding from all the blows to my face. My friends had heard every word of Niang’s through the open door. After they left, I had to go in to face my father. Long story short, I had to find a new place to live. And even worse, they were going to separate me from my one source of happiness, Aunt Baba. Love Always, Adeline. 1950
