FC: Phases of the Moon

As the moon moves around the Earth, we see different phases. This phase is called New Moon which means the moon is directly in front of the Earth and we do not see the light being reflected by the sun.

This phase is called Waxing Crescent. At this point the moon has moved to a different position and we can see a tiny sliver of the light being reflected by the sun.

This phase is called the First Quarter. We can now see half of the moon as it moves through its orbit around the Earth.

This phase is called Waxing Gibbous. We can now see almost the whole moon as it continues to move through it's orbit.

This phase is called Full Moon. The entire moon is now visible through the light being reflected from the sun.

This phase is called Waning Gibbous. We start to see less of the moon.

This phase is called Third Quarter Moon. At this point the moon is about half way through it's orbit around the Earth.

This phase is called Waning Crescent. The moon has made a full orbit around the Earth and we once again see less of the light being reflected from the sun.

S4E2: Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the moon. B. Explain the sequence of the phases of the moon.
