FC: Catie's Mixing Bowl: Baking in the past, present and future
PAST | Learning about baking: My Grammy (on my father's side) got me interested. I grew up with her living nextdoor and loved to watch her bake. | Grammy's specialty was pies - we used to have more than 10 kinds at Thanksgiving because everyone got their favorite! It took me forever to learn how to make the crust. She used Crisco in all of her recipes, and I learned to sift flour with an old fashioned hand-crank. | Grammy - my inspiration, and my first mentor! | Grammy liked to use cinnamon in her dishes, and so do I! That's what made her blueberry pie so special. | This is a picture of my favorite cookies Grammy used to make me - a recipe I learned by heart while she was still with us! | This reminds me of how I used to feel, and the patience Grammy had for teaching me.
PRESENT | Here's a picture of me with one of my latest takes on Grammy's great pies - I've turned her classic recipe into minis! | Lately, my favorite birthday and holiday gifts are the fancy baking tools (like my Kitchenaid mixer, or my food processor). They help me do all of the work in much less time, and with fewer dishes to wash! | I like to experiment with the classics - this is a recipe I created by adding creme de menthe and mint Oreo cookies to my favorite chocolate cupcake recipe.
Sometimes, you have to enjoy the fruits of your labor! | I love baking with my friends! Here, Alexa and I got a little carried away with the flour and rolling pins. Oops! | Here's another kind of mini-pies - these are pumpkin (the ones on the opposite page are apple raisin). | Classic apple pie - just like Grammy used to make! Well... almost. I'm still working on it! | Some of my inspirations today...
FUTURE | Catie's Cupcakes | I might like to open a cupcake shop of my own someday... | IF I have kids, I hope I can share my love of baking with them. I'd teach them just like my Grammy taught me! | I hope to continue experimenting with my baking, trying new things, creating new recipes and always improving. I am sure there will be new technologies and techniques in my future. | One thing I want to do more with is healthy baking recipes.
