Daisy's Style - Page Text Content

S: Daisy's Style

BC: Daisy's Style was written for a student in my class who has ADHD. Each day, she struggles to contain her energy and "hype," as she waits for her medication to take effect. The "black chair" was Daisy's idea. She loves to read and she suggested that it might be a good place for her to retreat to when she is having trouble sitting still. Daisy is one of the most brilliant, lovable and challenging students I have had the pleasure of teaching. I hope this book helps teachers and students alike to embrace each others' differences, and to open the lines of communication so that each child has a positive classroom experience.

FC: Daisy's Style | Written and Illustrated by: Randi Bernstein

For Jasmine, who taught me the importance of having patience, perseverance and the ability to adopt a new perspective.

"Boooommm!" sounded Lucas' locker as he got ready to begin his day. | "ZZZZiiiippp!" sounded Annalyn's pencil case as she got ready to begin her day. | "Fliiiippp!" sounded the pages in Adriana's math notebook as she got ready to begin her day. | "Click-clack!" sounded Molly's pen as she got ready to begin her day.

"Tap tap, stomp stomp!" sounded Daisy's feet as she twirled around the room. She was NOT ready to begin her day.

"Ok class, come to the rug for morning meeting," announced Ms. Rubin. She smiled warmly at the class.

" | "Daisy, pull it together. Let's go!" shouted Ms. Rubin. She frowned coldly at Daisy.

"Good morning, Sam," said Molly with a smile. | "Good morning, Reed," said Sam with a smile. | "Good morning, Sofia," said Reed with a smile.

"Eeehhhh, eehhh, la-la-la, ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhh. Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, friends!" chanted Daisy as she bounced happily in the center of the rug.

"Daisy! Enough! Go sit in the black chair until you are ready to behave like everyone else!" Ms. Rubin yelled,.

Daisy stomped to the back of the room. | Daisy got her book, plopped into the black chair, and began to read. | "Uuuh, uuuh, uuuh, uuuh!"

Every morning, the same thing happened. The class got ready to begin their day. Daisy disrupted the class during morning meeting. She was sent to the black chair.

Ms. Rubin became frustrated. So did Daisy. So did the other students. They asked Ms. Rubin, "Why does Daisy behave badly every morning?"

Even though Ms. Rubin was upset with Daisy, she knew that Daisy was unhappy too. One morning when Daisy had been sent to the black chair, Ms. Rubin asked her, "Why is it so hard for you to follow the classroom rules? Don't you know your behavior is disruptive?"

"I can't help it, Ms. Rubin. I am trying really hard to behave," Daisy said slowly. "I feel so 'hype' in the mornings. I take medicine to help me stay calm, but sometimes I have SO much energy that I can't control myself."

Ms. Rubin finally understood. She told the students that Daisy was not misbehaving on purpose. | "Daisy isn't behaving badly, she is just behaving differently."

Ms. Rubin had a wonderful idea! She decided that the class could celebrate Daisy's "hype" instead of punishing her for it. So the next morning....

"Tap tap, stomp stomp!" sounded Daisy's feet as she got ready to begin her day.

"Ok class, come to the rug for morning meeting," announced Ms. Rubin. She smiled warmly at the class, INCLUDING Daisy. | "Today, we are going to have morning meeting 'Daisy-style.'"

"Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, Sam," chanted Molly. | "Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, Sofia," chanted Reed. | "Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, Reed," chanted Sam.

"Eeehhhh, eehhh, la-la-la, ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhh. Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, friends!" chanted Daisy as she bounced happily in the center of the rug. Daisy was ready to begin her day!!

Daisy's Style | Retold by: Daisy

"Boooommm!" Lucas noisily slams his locker. | "ZZZZiiiippp!" Annalyn noisily opens her pencil case. | "Fliiiippp!" Adriana noisily turns the pages in her math notebook. | "Click-clack!" Molly noisily plays with her pen.

"Tap tap, stomp stomp!" I noisily twirl around the room. I have so much energy at the beginning of the day!

"Ok class, come to the rug for morning meeting," announces Ms. Rubin. She smiles warmly at the class.

" | "Daisy, pull it together. Let's go!" shouts Ms. Rubin. She frowns coldly at me. I need to control myself. I will get in trouble, but I can't stop moving!

"Good morning, Sam," says Molly with a smile. | "Good morning, Sofia," says Reed with a smile. | "Good morning, Reed," says Sam with a smile.

"Eeehhhh, eehhh, la-la-la, ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhh. Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, friends!" I chant as I bounce happily in the center of the rug. I'm trying to behave, really I am!

"Daisy! Enough! Go sit in the black chair until you are ready to behave like everyone else!" Ms. Rubin yells.

I stomp to the back of the room. | I am glad Ms. Rubin knows I need to go to "my space." Here, I can read a book and I will calm down. | "Uuuh, uuuh, uuuh, uuuh!"

Every morning is like this. The sounds of the class getting ready for the day are so noisy. I act "hype" because of all the excitement. I need to go to the black chair. Reading helps me forget about all the energy I have trouble controlling.

Ms. Rubin becomes frustrated. So do I. So do the other students. They ask Ms. Rubin, "Why does Daisy behave badly every morning?" This embarrasses me.

Even though Ms. Rubin gets upset with me, she knows that I am unhappy too. One morning when I am reading in "my space," Ms. Rubin asks, "Why is it so hard for you to follow the classroom rules? Don't you know your behavior is disruptive?"

"I can't help it, Ms. Rubin. I am trying really hard to behave," I say slowly.. I have never told a teacher about my "hype," but I know Ms. Rubin really cares about me. "I take medicine to help me stay calm, but sometimes I have SO much energy that I can't. control myself."

Ms. Rubin finally understands. She tells the students that everyone is different, and that is OK! I don't feel so embarrassed anymore. | "Daisy isn't behaving badly, she is just behaving differently."

Ms. Rubin has a wonderful idea! Ms. Rubin says that the class can celebrate my "hype," and this will help me feel more comfortable. So the next morning....

"Tap tap, stomp stomp!" I noisily twirl around the room.

"Ok class, come to the rug for morning meeting," announces Ms. Rubin. She smiles warmly at the class, INCLUDING me! | "Today, we are going to have morning meeting 'Daisy-style.'" Today, it's OK to act like me!

"Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, Sam," chants Molly. | "Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, Sofia," chants Reed. | "Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, Reed," chants Sam.

"Eeehhhh, eehhh, la-la-la, ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhh. Hello, hello, hello, good morning, good morning, good morning, friends!" I chant as I bounce happily in the center of the rug. I am ready to begin my day!!
