FC: Diary of a Wimpy Peasant | By Jacob Light

Diary of a Wimpy Peasant By Jacob Light 4/28/11 Eyer Middle School | 1

July 17th, 852: The other day I found this empty journal in the field, so I picked it up and here I am writing. I am a 23 year old peasant working in a manor in England. Today Work on the manor was harsh. While I was cleaning the kitchen floor, I overheard the landlord speaking about the horrid vikings. He was extremely upset because the vikings continued gaining land. He said that they captured Ireland in 836, and continued to move inland from there. I don't think we have anything to worry about. | Fleet of Viking Longships | Diary | 2

July 30th, 852: The viking longships seemed very fascinating, so I went to the manor's library to research. I discovered that these ships are very fast, and this enables the viking attacks to be very quick. The ships have one square sail in the center, and a dragon head on its bow. Vikings used oars to power the boat. They have a great ability to switch directions quickly because there were so many people rowing it. There can be up to 350 ships in one viking raid. | 3

November 8th, 852: The vikings have captured ports along England. There are rumors going around that they are going to occupy England for the Winter. I heard they were going to stop raiding countries until the winter was over. Now I'm beginning to worry about the vikings. I just hope they don't continue to move further inland, and if they do, I hope we're ready to defend. | Viking Warrior | 4

November 15th, 852: Today the landlord required me to pick a full field of corn. My back is aching, and I wanted to sleep, but I couldn't help but writing today. My worries are increasing. The Vikings are staying in English villages for the winter. My fears are beginning to come true. They originated in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and have continued to move further inland in the past years. At this point they are led by Ivar, and Olaf the White. I am considering fleeing the | manor for my own safety. | Map of Viking homelands and early invasions. | 5

December 10th, 852: Lately I've been thinking, how do we defend ourselves against these raids? The vikings perform lightning quick attacks, and have a variety of different weapons. They use battle axes, spears, throwing arrows, and double-edged swords. They also have berserkers that crush anyone in their paths. What do we have for defense? Just a bunch of "noble" knights that torture the town's people and refuse to fight. We are doomed. | Double-edged sword | Battle Axe | 6

March 2nd, 853: The new year has come, and so has new work and viking attacks. Today I had to build a tool shed for for the lord. I was given no breaks at all. Well, that's beside the point. The vikings have continued their raids now that winter is over. | Their defense mechanisms are the same as ours. Wooden shields, chainmail, and helmets are mainly used. I just hope we are ready to defend our territory. | 7

Friday April 13th, 853: The vikings have attacked. They've raided the manor and killed everyone... but me. These are my dieing words. I have been terribly wounded by a viking battle axe. Ivar the Boneless led the raid and continued across the countryside. I knew this was coming. The vikings are going to take control of England. I have to put the pencil down. I am growing weak as it is already. I hate the vikings, I hope they will be stopped. This is the end. Good Bye. | Ivar the Boneless | 8
