FC: Grunge Music by Jon
Grunge music began with bands such as Nirvana, Screaming Trees, and Soundgarden. In the Seattle area, these bands began a trend of altered lyrics and distorted guitars as opposed to that of heavy metal. After albums such as Nirvana's Nevermind was released, a new type of music was being discovered nationwide. It was named “"Grunge"” for its somewhat unclean sound and the rugged appearance of bands of the era.
THE BIG APPLE | By the time I was old enough to appreciate this unique type of music, the grunge era was mostly absent from popular music. My uncle was a huge fan of Grunge in his younger years and introduced it to me when I was as young as six years old. He often played the songs on CD’s or an Ipod while in the car with me. These few artists and songs peaked my interest for the future.
I deepened my horizon in Grunge music in middle school. I started listening to the works of bands such as Alice in Chains. Without suggestions from my uncle I started finding my own artists that I enjoyed. These discoveries gave me my own unique taste in certain aspects of Grunge music.
With these inspiring lyrics and sounds I started experimenting with my own works. I started writing my own songs in early middle school and used many ideas from the Grunge theme. This includes both lyrics and tunes that I found appealing. Grunge was a high influence on my decision to begin composing my own music.
Now that I am older I have become more mature and experienced in music. After using my first steps of discovery in Grunge music, I made the wise decision of learning many different instruments. The experience and talent I have established has made me a very successful student in music classes. Grunge has also improved my skills as a musician overall.
