1: Iowa People and Places | by Mrs. Feurbach's 5th grade class | Fall 2010

2: Wyatt Earp Wyatt Earp is a famous Iowan. Wyatt Earp is the best known law man. Wyatt Earp survived a lot of gun fights due to his extraordinary patience and resolute manner. Wyatt Earp was born in Monmouth Illinois on March 19, 1848. He went into the cattle business. In 1874 Wyatt Earp moved to Wichita Kansas and worked as a part time law man and city maintenance man. He then moved to Dodge City and in 1876 was offered the chance to be chief deputy. He intended to restore order to Dodge City, IA. Wyatt Earp is known all over Iowa.

5: Jack Trice | Jack Trice is one of the most famous people in Iowa. Jonny Jack Trice was known as Jack. He came to Iowa in 1922. His freshman year he married Cora Mae Starland. He was the first African American to play football at Iowa State college (University). On the 2nd play of the game he broke his collar bone but stayed in the game. Later in the 3rd quarter Minnesota crushed him. Two days later he died. In a paragraph he stated that he tried to honor his race, and people were expecting big things. He gave his body and life on the field.

7: Bob Feller was born on November third 1918 in Van Horn Iowa. As a kid he would take the pigs to the market to be sold. At age 16 he struck out 18 St.Louise Cardinals. He became famous when he pitched for 3 innings and struck out every one who came up to bat. At age 22 he signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians. At age 72 he has been living a happy life as a senior citizen.

8: Kurt Warner was born in Burlington Iowa on June 22,1971. Kurt grew up in Cedar Rapids. Kurt as senior passed 1,555 yards. | Kurt led his high school football team to a 7-2 record at the state playoffs. Kurt worked at a HyVee in Cedar Rapids and got paid $5.00 an hour

9: Kurt led two NFL football teams to the Super Bowl and won one. Kurt has thrown 4,000 yards multiple times in a season. | Kurt Warner is on Dancing with the stars. | Sean Wendel

10: Chief Black Hawk is the leader of the Sac Indian Tribe. Forced by white men to leave Illinois to go to Iowa, He led his tribe across the Mississippi River and started the war that was named after Chief Black Hawk. He was taken as a prisoner. He was a war chief and medicine man. He was born in 1767 in Northern Illinois and died on October 3, 1838.

12: John Wayne Nathan Tofte

13: John Wayne's real name was Marion Micheal Morrison. He was born on May 26,1907 and lived in Winterset Iowa. John's nickname was Duke. When he was 6 his family moved to California because his dad had a bad lung. When he was older he played USC football where his coach was Howard Jones. John then grew up to be an actor. He was in a whopping 147 films. After many years he died in Los Angles, California.

15: Wild Bill Cody was a famous Iowan and long ago he was born in Iowa 1846. His birth name was William Fredrick Cody which is now known as Wild Bill Cody, and he also has a third nick name, Buffalo Bill. He didn't stay in one place so he was a what I call traveler. He was a hunter for rail road workers ,and then he was a scout for the army. He was so good at his job he earned the medal of honor. created by Tucker Lee Phaiboun

17: The Sullvian brothers were born in WaterLoo IA in 1853.They fought in a really big and popular war.I think that war they fought the Japanese army or if it was some other war. Since they were so famous they had weird yet in a way sort of cool nick names that were destroyers.They were also a very good singing group. Created by Noah Vanhorn

19: Grenville was born on1831. He owned a Victorian Mansion. He joined the Union Army. He fought in the Civil War, and he was the Colonel of the Fourth Iowa Volunteers Infantry. He was promoted to general and major. He was hurt in the war. He left the army in May 30, 1866. He lived in Council Bluffs. He helped Build 3 railroads called, the Union Pacific, Central Pacific , and the Transcontinental.He died in 1916.

20: Loess hills is a famous Iowa place. Loess hills is 200 ft tall from the ground. Loess Hill's old name was loose hill. Loess hill is the only mountains in Iowa. It was formed by water and a volcano. Did you know that the gravel there is ash? People go there because it is pretty. Loess kind hen- means Loess days. 22: Robert Noyce was a very famous Iowan. He was born on Dec. 12, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa. He grew up in Grinnell, Iowa and was a physics major at Grinnell College. His nickname was Mayor of Silicon Valley.

23: He helped to create a new industry when he developed the technology that would eventually become a microchip. He also was the first scientist to work in the area. Awhile later he died of a heart attack in his home in Austin, Texas when he was 62 years old.

24: Geodes are a kind of rock you have to open to find the surprise. | Geodes are the coolest rocks in the world! | Geodes are Iowa`s state rock. It can get heavy. On the inside geodes inside are shiny and sparkly. Some are smooth and some are hard. | Lots of people love the geode because it is cool. I like the geode because it is a cool rock.

26: Abigail VanBaren She had 2 children named Edward Jay and Jeanne. Her nickname was Abby and Popo. She has an identical twin sister 17 min. older her. She co-wrote the popular Dear Abby column with her daughter .Now she does it alone. Abby was awarded a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. By Rian Dillavou

28: Nile Kinnick was born in Adel, IA on June 9, 1918. He has 2 younger brothers whose names are George and Ben. He was 5-8 and weighed 130 pounds. Nile was a star athlete at Adel, IA for football and basketball for 3 years before his family moved to Omaha, Nebraska. In college he failed a tryout for football at Minnesota. Then he decided to go to the University of Iowa. As a freshman he started basketball, baseball, and football. As a sophomore he dropped baseball. As a junior he dropped basketball and stuck with football. In Aug. 1941 he decided to go to the Navel Air force. After college while waiting to be called in for duty he was the assistant coach for Iowa. While Nile was in the naval Air force he was flying a training mission from U.S.S. Lexighton off the coast of Venezuela and experienced engine problems and he died on June 2, 1943. After he died he was put in the football hall of fame in 1957. In honor of him the Hawkeye Stadium was named after him .He had 1,674 yards rushing and 18 interceptions an Iowa record that lasted a half of a century. Nile Kinnick still is remembered here in Iowa for what he did.

30: Ashton Kutcher was born in Cedar Rapids IA. He was born on Feb. 7th 1978. His Birth name is Christopher Ashton Kutcher, but his nicknames are Ash and Kutch. He is 6ft 2in tall. | His first job was a Cheerio Duster at the General Mills factory. Then He went to college at University of Iowa and studied biochemical. | His sister’s name is Tausha, and he has a twin brother his name Michael. When Michael was little he had a septal heart defect. He was Daddy Warbuck in a play in High school of Annie.

31: Then he ended up being Kelso in That 70’s Show. He has been in Just Married, Valentine’s Day, Open Season, Bobby, and What Happens in Vegas. He got married to Demi Morre. He owns a restraint called Dolce. He is voted #3 hottest hottie out of 100 men. | When he was at Iowa he was discovered by a modeling scout and won a modeling contest. 32: Iowa state fair has over 600 exhibitors. It is held every year for 11 days in Aug. In 1879 the fair was moved. Iowa State Fair was first held in Fairfield in 1854. From 1855, they have traveled to many places. They were given a permanent location in 1886. It is for all ages. There are over 120 acts. This is America's classic fair and Iowa's largest fair tourism event. It is held on 400 acres. It has 160 activities. It is held ever year. Done By Bella Andersen

34: The Cherry Sisters By Maddie Davis The Cherry Sisters lived on a farm near Marion Iowa. There were 5 sisters named Ella, Lizze, Addi, Effie, and Jessie. Their parents died in 1888. The sisters then became orphans. That's when they started to write songs. The Cherry Sisters were advertised as Americas worst act. The sisters performed behind a net because the audience threw drinks and rotten eggs, but they performed through it. The sisters kept performing until 1903 when Jessie died of Malaria. They made several attempts to play again but never made it.

36: Slipknot | By Truman Murphy

37: Slipknot is an American heavy metal band from Des Moines. The band is made up of the drummer Shawn Crhan and the bassist Paul Gray. Then 7 other players came to the band and there was Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor. They live in Des Moines Iowa. The band was formed in 1995. Paul Gray died on May 24, 2010.

38: Shawn Johnson was born on January 19, 1996 in Des Moines. She is an only child and lives with her parents Doug and Teri Johnson. Shawn started gymnastics when she was three years old. She loves English. Her hobbies are taking dogs from shelters on walks, and scrapbooking. Her favorite foods are steak, chicken kabobs, and strawberries. Shawn Johnson trains 20-25 hours a week and more for other important events. She is a 2007 world champ and has won the all around in the world American cup. In 2007 Shawn had the best rookie season ever recorded in 2007. She led the 2008 Olympic team to a silver and won silver medals as well as a gold on the beam finals. Shawn Johnson already been selected to go to the 2012 Olympics. She is currently 18 years old rand has gone to Dancing with the stars.

41: Dan Gable By Gavin Gretillat Dan Gable was a famous wrestler. He was born in Waterloo, Iowa. He lived in Iowa his whole life. He won a lightweight championship for Iowa State. He trained for 6-7 hours every day. He is in the US hall of fame. He was an Olympic gold medalist in 1972. He was a successful college wrestling coach in Iowa. He only lost 1 match his whole career.

47: Meredith Willson By: Katelyn Pinkham Meredith Willson became famous because of all the shows he wrote and produced. He was born in Mason City, Iowa in 1902 and lived there until he was 16. Meredith Willson loved music and played the flute. He wrote lots of hit songs. He wrote the musical “The Music Man” which eventually they made into a movie. He also wrote the University of Iowa Fight Song. He won The Tony award for “The Music Man”. His biggest success was “The Music Man”. Meredith Willson was a very famous Iowan.

48: The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were famous because they made the first successful airplane design and flew it. They were brothers and pilots. They fixed and built bikes before they started to fly airplanes. Their planes were the first military airplanes. The Wright brothers lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1878 to 1881.
