BC: the end

FC: The Scarlet Letter

1: The scarlet letter is a red letter A embroidered with gold thread, on the bosom of a woman named Hester Prynne who is doomed to wear it for the rest of her life. The red A is seen as a major sin against society at first, but as the story goes on it begins to change from adultery to able to angel in the end.

2: But the point which drew all eyes, and, as it were, transfigured the wearer.....was that SCARLET LETTER, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom. | It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations of humanity and enclosing her in a sphere by herself. | Though it was just a letter on a vest, it had some evil power to

3: "The vulgar, who, in those dreary old times, were always contributing a grotesque honor to what interested their imaginations, had a story about the Scarlet letter which we might readily work up into a terrific legend. They averred that the symbol was not not mere scarlet cloth tinged in an earthly dye pot, but was red-hot with infernal fire, and could be seen glowing all night, where ever Hester Prynne walked around in the night time." | The Scarlet letter marked her as if she was a demon, giving her a close to demonic feeling. As the hell fire forever burns red, so did her letter.

4: "Man had marked this woman's sin by a scarlet letter which had such potent and disastrous efficiency that no human sympathy could reach her, save it were sinful like herself."

5: "On the breast of her gown, in fire red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread appeared the letter A." | Even though it was her punishment for her to wear the letter she made it look beautiful like herself.

8: "The letter was the symbol of her calling. Such helpfulness was found in her - so much power to do and power to sympathize - that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength." | After being marked by the man she didn't let that discourage her She still worked hard and was looked up to because of it.

9: Adultery - in the beginning the letter "A" means adultery. It symbolizes that Hester Prynne has committed a sin. | Able - in the middle of the novel the symbol changes to mean Able. It shows that Hester has changed her ways, realized what she has done and is still willing to help others despite the way people treated her. | Angel - in the end the towns people see the A in the sky and think it means angel. Dimmesdale thinks that G-d is recognizing what he has done and punishing him for it in front of the crowd.
