8: Elmwood - 41 North Baltimore - 0 | MICA BLOCKS THE PUNT!
9: Elmwood’s just over 11 minutes from its second victory of the season. The Royals, though, still have a little bit of work to do. Elmwood built a 26-0 lead over North Baltimore before Friday’s game was suspended because of lightning with 11:10 left in the fourth quarter. The game will be completed Saturday at 6. The Royals scored twice on blocked punts and held NB to 69 yards before the game was stopped. Both teams are 1-1. “It’s a different situation to be in and to be able to finish the game, that’s great,” Elmwood coach Brian Cooper said. “We’ll have to adjust and keep going. Jacob Wise recovered the first blocked punt in the end zone to give Elmwood a 6-0 lead with 5:21 left in the first quarter. Mica Robinson sprinted in from the left end to block the punt with his right hand after Elmwood failed to score on a first-and-goal at the eight. The Royals then held NB without a first down, forcing the punt. Although Robinson had the block, teammate Sawyer Haines almost blocked the kick, too, as he came in untouched from the right end. “I went hard off the edge and went in with my hands up,” said Robinson, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound offense and defensive lineman. “That set the tone for the rest of the game. The first score is huge and you always want to be the team to get it.” “That was a big momentum change and we needed that after we didn’t score,” Cooper said. Wise, a wide receiver, had the second blocked punt on the second play of the fourth quarter. He came up the middle and easily smothered the kick as no Tiger put a hand on him. Fellow wide receiver Ben Williams, who scored on a 25-yard pass from Zach Foster in the second quarter, picked up the ball at the 1-yard line and stepped into the end zone for a 26-0 lead. “There’s no reason for those blocked punts, that’s just a lack of heart, desire,” Woodruff said. “You have to block them and then release. We just released and let them come in.” The Royals also were solid defensively as they held NB to just 39 yards rushing and 29 yards passing. NB standout running back Dalton Ishmael was limited to zero yards on three carries as the Royals stacked the line of scrimmage with as many as nine and 10 defenders. “Our defense played hard and we followed our scouting report,” Robinson said. “We made sure we contained him and didn’t let him get outside, so he could break off those long runs. About 80 percent of our defense was focused on him and the rest was making sure they didn’t hurt us with the passing game.” Twenty-seven of NB’s rushing yards came on a play in the second quarter when NB had 12 players on the field and no penalty was called. “The defense played well,” Cooper said. “There are always things you can fix, but when the other team has zero on the board, how can you be mad?” Woodruff limited Ishmael’s carries because Elmwood’s defense was focused on the 6-foot-3, 190-pounder. He rushed for 1,164 yards and 18 TDs last season. Elmwood also put heavy pressure on NB quarterback Jacob Williams. “We couldn’t get anything generated offensively at all,” Woodruff said. “The offensive line didn’t do a very good job.” Elmwood totaled 267 yards, but was hurt by two interceptions and one lost fumble. The Royals also were slowed by a number of sacks and penalties. "We didn’t finish very well, that goes along with growing pains. The kids are starting to believe, but we just can’t finish,” Cooper said. “We were a great 10-yard line to 10-yard line team. “The good news is we haven’t hit a conference game yet and we can get those out of the way,” Cooper added. “And once we hit the conference, we can put it all together. I’m hoping we can finally get something going. We need to eliminate the mistakes and build off the positives.” The 25-yard TD pass to Williams came after NB’s defensive back fell, increasing Elmwood’s lead to 12-0 with 6:49 to go in first half. The Royals increased the lead to 20-0 on Foster’s 1-yard run with 7:03 left in the third quarter. NB failed to cover the second half kickoff, allowing Elmwood to fall on the ball at the Tiger 39. Foster scored seven plays later.
