During our flight to Paris, we had to make an emergency landing due to another passenger's health condition. We were three quarters of the way to France when it happened and had to turn around and fly to Montreal, QC. Our ten hour flight soon turned into a seventeen hour flight.

I never dreamed of seeing these animals with my own two eyes. Africa is a truly amazing place. | jackal | ostriches | a rare, wild kirk!

 elephants | zebras | grant's gazelles | millipedes

july 4, 2011 our campsite is ridiculously awesome. we have a flushing toilet in each of our tents and there's even a way to shower! the food is fantastic - we've even had a souffle! it doesn't seem possible to live this well.

Nature Notes elephants store scents of foods, from places they've been and can share those scents with other elephants. | i love acacia trees! | what was once called a crested francolin will now be deemed the "ding dong ditch bird" because they are constantly coming up to our tent, letting out an ear piercing shriek and running away as soon as we come to the door.

GODWIN | ROLAND | meeting godwin and roland was probably one of the very best parts of the entire trip. godwin's fantastic animal noises and roland's offer to milk a wildabeest so I could have milk in my coffee still has me laughing. | you've had malaria how many times? | Godwin claimed to have had malaria at least ten times in his life. Apparently, it's very common and very treatable if you know how to catch it early.

I would have been alright spending the whole trip in tarangire. everyone we met was so memorable.

welcome to | lake manyara, tanzania | july 6, 2011 after a short flight to lake manyara, we drove in an enormous car (built to hold ten people) to the national park. the animals weren't afraid of people whatsoever. it was definitely an experience. | July 06 - July 07

lake manyara tree lodge | one thing I learned about African people: they really love their gin and tonics.

tree climbing lion! | we saw lots of pumbas but no timons

 Sunsets in Tanzania

when we were in lake manyara, we saw an unbelievable number of baboons. that was by far the most common animal we encountered while in the national park but most uncommonly encountered in the other areas we visited in tanzania.

the crater is 260 square kilometers but only 19 square kilometers from north to south. 7000 ft in depth | 44 cents | Ngorongoro Crater | JULY 07 - JULY 09

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge | Nature Notes the wildabeest are also known as the "spare part" because they have the face of a grasshopper, the tail of a horse, the legs of a hyena and the horns of a cow.

We had the greatest lunch EVER in a small area of the crater. While pretty awesome on it's own, the highlight was when an African Kite came soaring down and stole a piece of Jan's chicken.

the maasai | meeting | the maasai men work as guards for the crater lodge and will escort you to your room in case of animal encounters.

A Performance by the Maasai | While we were watching, drinks and appetizers were served. We had gin & tonics (like everyone else there) and enjoyed the show.

one of the very best highlights of the trip was

catching a glimpse of the lazy lion on the crater floor

 VROOM, VROOM fastest animals COBRA 24 km/hr HIPPO 40 km/hr OSTRICH 70 km/hr | Bananagrams before Lunch | leopard tortoise! | kirk!

 shangazi | july 12, 2011 day room | arusha, tanzania | lodge

What is Life? It is a flash of a firefly in the night. It is a breath of a buffalo in the winter time. It is as the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.
