FC: My Forbidden Face Growing up under the Taliban: A young Woman's Story LATIFA BY: Odalys Herrera
The Call When Dr. sima sends a message to Latifa's mom stating''The French are looking for women who would fly to Paris to talk about our plight in Afghanistan. A French organization and a women's magazine want to launch an information campaign. I can't go there myself, so i told the French organization to contact you. It would be good if Latifa could go there to talk about what she's seen, the way women are persecuted, the secret schools. Such testimony is the only way we can resist. And you should go with her; you've been a doctor and you can't practice anymore because if the Taliban. the two of you should go there.(It's important!) The first people you'll meet will be journalists. It's a magazine called Elle and it's quite well known. And you'll be able to ask questions at the European Parliament, you'll see influenced people, like Mme. Nicole Fontaine. You can't pass up this chance!'' (Latifa183-184)
Refusal of the call: Latifa says she'd like to go but she's afraid. First of all, She has never traveled in the West, never taken a plane. She has been living shut up at a home since she was sixteen.(Latifa184) Latifa struggles with herself because she was so used to living shut in her home against her will that it terrifies her live her only place where she can be herself. She feels conflicted about doing the right thing or doing what was safe.
Supernatural Aid: Dr. Sima acts as her ''push'' to go to France and accept the invitation. If she never sent the message for them to talk about how horrible the taliban has been, none of this would ever help the Afghanistan movement.Dr.Sima believes strongly that Latifa can do this and help straighten things out. She is a guide for the fact that she leads Latifa to where her destiny awaits her. And she tells her about people she'll meet along the way
Threshold: When Latifa and her family cross the border and start to travel into Peshawar indicates that there is no going back from this point (Latifa186). Once she passes the border, she knows that there is no going back for that point.Once she is through, she has to do her best to get the message across that Afghanistan is being controlled by the taliban. She must also let the world know that women have no rights anymore. That they are nothing and not respected.
Road of Trials: When the man at the at the agency says that the tickets and the numbers don't match(Latifa187) Then getting the French Visas(Latifa187) At the Airport in Islamabad where the policeman questions the visas.(L189) The stop over Dubai where another policeman Questions the documents(L191-192) And Not knowing French or the geography(L197)She panics that they'll get caught and taken back home.
Goddess Nicole Fontaine because her and the Journalists show Latifa and her mother that she has her love and support. They help the stay in France enjoyable. The ladies promise to help them out. They allow hope to seep into Latifa's heart after years of doubt and terror.
Temptation Staying in France because it's very beautiful and peaceful, compared to Afghanistan. She didn't want to return and be a nobody. She loved the freedom she has in France. She didn't want to return to a place of fear and suffering. She also enjoyed the culture and people she has met.
Apotheosis When she tells the world her story of living under the control of the Taliban and all the horrible things she has seen and experienced. She makes the taliban hated thought the world. She succeeds in getting the French governments assistants against the Taliban. She finds friends that'll help out the women of her country. She has hope that everything will work out for the better.(Latifa197)
Refusal of the return When she finds out that the Taliban are looking for her and have a bounty on her head for telling lies to the French about the Taliban. She becomes fearful for her family and friends. The bounty on her head is high and she fears for her life. She can never return home after gaining this knowledge.(latifa198)
Master of Two Worlds When she finally gets her chance to tell her story and gets her freedom of the terrors she has seen, even though she could never go home again. The women's movement becomes active. She is free of the Taliban's control. She feels relief that her message and journey has not been in vain. The taliban are seen by the world as evil and corrupt.
