The largest part of the human brain is the cerebrum it is made of gray and white matter. The cerebrum has two hemispheres divided by a fissure(deep groove.) The surface area is called the cortex it has many areas, and each area has a specific job to do. The cerebral cortex that controls muscles is called the motor area. If one side becomes damaged the opposite side could possibly become paralyzed.
Behind the cerebrum is the cerebellum. It is divided into two hemispheres and is folded. Control balance and coordination are its main functions. If the cerebellum becomes damaged, muscular movements will be uncontrollable.
The medulla oblongata is the lowest part of the brain. Attached to it is the spinal cord. It is made of white and gray matter. On the outside is the white matter. It is like a highway for nerve messages from higher parts of the brain. Many of the vital functions are controlled by certain cells the gray matter layer of the medulla.
The nucleus is surrounded by cytoplasm and is located in the cell body which is the control center of every cell. Protoplasm is essential for the life of all cells. Thread-like fibers grow out of the cell body. Dendrites carry messages to the cell body. The axon carries messages away from the cell body. At the other side of the cell body are axon branches that form into finer branches called end plates. From the dendrites to the cell body, then beside the axon to the end plat is the only way messages will travel through a neuron.
A long bundle of nerves found within the vertebral column is the spinal cord. 31 nerves are connected to the spinal cord, they carry messages to and from the spinal cord. The nerves reach out to all parts of the body. The brain also receives messages from nerves. Muscles and glands also receive messages from other nerves. If a part of the spinal cord is punctured from that part down the person is paralyzed.
How the Nervous System works together The nervous system is one big factory. When one thing needs help they come to the rescue. No part of the nervous system could work by its self if one part is not working all parts are either not working also or working slower than usual.
Things that harm the Nervous system: The most harmful thing for the nervous system are illegal drugs it doesn't really matter what type of illegal drug since they are all very harmful. Drugs not only harm the nervous system but they also harm other systems.
