S: Portraits by Ellen Hawtrey 2008-2011

BC: After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature from the University of Michigan in 1988, Ellen moved to Seville, Spain to follow her first love~ that of Spanish language and culture. There, she embraced the rich history of classic art and architecture, and was enamored by the works of the European masters. While inspired by the religious paintings of the Renaissance, she was moved most by paintings with vivid, bright colors representing the beauty of simple pleasures in Spanish life. The works of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida are by far the most influential in Ellen’s love of painting, a discovery later in her life. After several years of traveling, Ellen earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and entered in the corporate world. Despite success there, she felt that there was something yet undiscovered within her to express her intrinsic creativity. An unexpected move to Lakeland, Florida led her to discover just that. In 2008, a gift from her husband Geoff of fine art lessons with renowned, Ringling alum artist Gary Gessford catapulted Ellen into discovering her true bliss—oil on canvas. With the guidance and encouragement of artist and mentor Richard Powers, Ellen has shown her work in several shows, festivals and displays throughout Florida, including painting on-site as a featured artist of the Florida State Fair. Currently, Ellen’s work can be found in Winter Haven art galleries Drops of Jupiter and Cracker House Artists. Her paintings don the walls of several private collectors throughout the United States, Spain and Ireland. Currently, Ellen happily dedicates most of her time to her two young daughters and her husband. She is working on a series to benefit the "Humans for Sale: The Truth about Human Trafficking" lecture series. Children are the inspiration for many of her current works. | Ellen Hawtrey spent her entire childhood in the small, Midwestern village of Vernon, Michigan. The youngest of six, Ellen found it most effective to express her voice through art, though often on canvases of bare walls, much to the chagrin of her loving family. | About the Artist
