BC: Red Pants installation at Scarab Club, Detroit

FC: RED PANTS | Christopher Schneider

1: In 2003, I was in New York City with friends. We were having a beer in a bar when two women walked in, both wearing red pants. This struck us a funny, so my friend snapped a photo of them and later gave me the print. My obsession with red pants began. I photograph red pants whenever I encounter them. I stalk them like a hunter, surreptitiously shooting without focusing or aiming. Only once have the police been called. The project started with a simple point-and-shoot digital camera, which are utterly silent when taking a picture. Now I use my camera phone, which is even better at being stealth. This project is about obsession, which is never logical, often farcical, and quite real. The drive to collect these images is insatiable and ongoing. This book only marks what the project looks like at this point in time and are some of my favorite. There are and will be many more. In fact, I shot more red pants today. Ideally you would be looking at a wall right now, where you can view hundreds of 4x6 mounted images in a grid, first seeing the grand volume and then moving in close to discern each individual image. People who have visited shows at Gallery Project in Ann Arbor, Scarab Club in Detroit, or Art Prize in Grand Rapids, can attest that seeing this installation in person is a unique experience. Images of red pants has been taken all over the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico and Belize. In Mexico, I had to suspend the project because red pants were far too common, while in Belize all I found was one pair hanging on a clothes line. Most commonly I find children, attractive young women, urban males, the overweight, and elderly women sporting red pants, but there are others. They are rare enough to make the search difficult. Even rarer are the few occasions when I found two of them in the same place. This rarity may change, since I am told that red pants are currently in style. I would like to think I had something to do with it. Christopher Schneider, October 1, 2012

50: Christopher Schneider grew up in Nebraska where he taught high school. He moved to Florida where he helped produce the Guinness Book of World Records' largest photograph. Currently he lives in a former crackhouse in Hamtramck, Michigan, an immigrant town nestled in the loving arms of Detroit. In 2003 he completed an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art, studying under Carl Toth, to whom he offers all the thanks in the world. Schneider's work has appeared in numerous galleries across the United States and as far away as Shanghai, China. He is also an adjunct photography professor at a few different colleges and directs two non-profits: Hatch: A Hamtramck Art Collective and the Cranbrook Summer Art Institute. Hatch is working on converting an old police station into an art center and CSAI offers summer art classes to teenagers and draws students from all over the world. More of Schneider's photography, which has nothing to do with red pants, can be seen at www.schneida.com.
