FC: CAN'T STOP THE | Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages.?
The following pages will exhibit the equipment I used during the research and planning stage of this project. Talking you through what I learnt, the difficulties I faced and how I overcame these difficulties. | Research and Planning (Software)
If music be the food of love, play on. | Google was the main search engine that I used to investigate the pop genre in order develop my understanding and knowledge to add on what I already knew of the pop genre, likewise music videos in general. Using this made my research process smoother, As I did not have any difficulties in using this software. This may be due to the fact that I often use this search engine in media class and out of media class. This meant that I have already familiarise myself with it. Using Google allowed me to visit many websites, which provides the right information I needed and would not be able to think off on the top of my head. Also most of the images, those of the artist and music in general that were used on my wix site were collected via Google. I also used Google to look at previous students work and their final music video from this I was able to edit my own work.
Prezi is an online zoom presentation that I used to present my research on pop genre, this software was really useful as it was able to mutil-task by allowing me embed music videos from YouTube and images. This made my work more interactive and fun to read whenever I presented my finding to my peers/target audience. At first prezi did not create any problems for me; however prezi updated their software which meant that I faced a minor problem of discovering where certain tools were kept but with the help of people in my team I was able to find tools I needed. In addition to this, not all my video that I would embed would download/upload properly on prezi which meant that I am not able to analysis the music videos. I fix this by simply typing and saving my work on word document and restarting the computer. For the planning stage I used this software to show the drawn drafts of our digipaks and magazines and also to collect feedback for the type of font we should use for the digipak and magazine. I also used this software whiles answering question 1 of my evaluation questions.
From the entire Microsoft office, PowerPoint was the most frequent software I used, followed by Word Document. PowerPoint was another method I used to present my research for example Michael Jackson’s timeline. This is because it allows me to be creative especially with the transitions and the editing of images and fonts. I had no difficulties on operating this software, which allowed presenting my research run smoothly, this also applied to when I used Word documents. Through Word Documents I typed up all my research in my own words and used the software’s spelling and grammar checker to help me to check and correct my spellings to improve my writing.
My entire project was presented on Wix, which is an online web builder. I only used this software last year for my evaluation questions. Based on this I did not really have time to discover the many creative things I could use to make my website fun, interactive and attracting. It also meant that I not really have any problem as I simply had to choose a template and edit it as my own creation, unlike this year, where I had to build my website from scratch. Wix in comparison to last year where I used blogger permitted me to be artistic and original and create a website which would be suitable for our artist and genre. At first I choose a flash supported template and this came along with many difficulties as not all internet servers like internet explorer would show and save my site, also I could not embed my work directly onto the website. This mean I had to put buttons which opened new tab and therefore it was tough to navigate the website. However, whenever I faced these problems I would seek help from my teachers and IT technician.
Any good music must be an innovation. | Youtube is video sharing software. Through this website I was able to frequently watch all the music videos that inspired us like Justin Biber’s baby, Usher’s OMG and those that I analysed. Also Youtube was used for us to upload our drafts of our music videos that way our audience had easy access to it as many young between the ages 13-18 use Youtube on a daily bases. There were a few complications of upload our works on Youtube due to many factors such as the format of the product we were trying to upload. This mean that we had to change the format of our music videos on final cut before uploading them. Lastly we used Youtube to watch videos on how to do things like work a DLR cameea, Final cut and motion. Using Youtube in this project has taught me about the technical aspects involved in the creation of products like sizes, formats, etc.
Music is the voice that tells us that the human race is greater than it knows. | Since I wanted everything to be accessible on my website and word documents and powerpoints could not be embedded directly on my website I had to use Scribd, a software that I had use previously in AS, as it allows me to share my documents and the website automatically generates an embed code that I can use to make my website. This was useful as most of my research and planning was presented via powerpoint for example my Michael Jackson timeline research and the pitching of our song ‘Superstar Dream’. I learnt using this format made my website much more fuller and busier in comparison to just have icons lined up.
Communication is a key asset in any project, especially when you are working in a group. Using our outlook accounts we would send each other group works and arrange meetings with each other for when we were going to record for our music video and construct our digipak and magazine. We also used new media communication apps and social networking sites like BBM (blackberry massager) , Facebook, Twitter and Wattapp to contact our artist. The fact that I was able to attach images, videos and document using these methods of communications is very useful as it meant we did not always have to reply on our computers to work but could be in a bus and still work done. | We used the in the music video when we had the fans reading Jayson twitter. Since most of us had a twitter account we were able to use the site smoothly without any problems. Also we used the icons of this social network sites on our magazine.
This software was mostly used during the planning stage of our project. It was used to collected feedback from our audience on the music video, digipak and magazine we created, as we did not want to bombard our audience with heap loads of paper questionnaires, which we may not be able to always get back. So we used survey monkey an online survey creator that automatically gathers data into charts making it very useful as it makes it easy to present our finding in a very understanding manner. However, survey monkey are not about to summaries our qualitative data received from our audience. On that account we had to generate new ideas on how to collect such data, which was by enlarging our images and asking our audience to write comments on them, for example when we first drew our first draft of our digipak.
This site was used to collect information about the pop genre, pop artists and the history of music videos. The problem with using this site is that, since anyone can edit the information on the site, therefore I had to always make sure that the information provided was accurate and in my own words.
These are text- to- speech websites that features created avatars presenting you works once they have been typed in the comment box. We used this instead of always typing the reflections, explaining our work. These sites are very easy to use, so we faced no difficulties. It therefore made our site more interactive and enjoyable to read through.
This is an online video maker that turns images and music into short video clip. I used this when I analysed different male pop artist, it makes it more fun and creative by adding special effects and transitions to the images and information written.
 Research and Planning (Hardware)
During both the entire project our mobile phones played major and important roles. Whenever we did not have access to the cameras we would use our phones to take pictures of our audience part taking surveys and feedback sessions. Also we would take pictures of our participating in the making of our products.
We used cameras several time during the planning stage of our project. We used it to take all pictures of ourselves working and the shooting of the music video. The most important stage that the camera played a major role was during the photo shoot, where we had to take pictures for the digipak and the magazine. We wanted our pictures to look professional so decided to use a DLR camera to capture effective pictures. Being so used to a digital camera there were numerous problem we faced like changing of settings, but watching videos on YouTube of people talking through how to use the camera was really helpful and they were members in our group who were experienced in using this equipment and taught the rest of us.
Without music, life would be a mistake. | Constructions technologies (Software and Hardware)
I need drama in my life to keep making music. | We used this equipment when were recording the dance scene in the alley way. Since we recorded in the night, which we done purposely because we wanted to have a variety of lighting in the music video | We used this equipment when were recording the dance scene in the alley way. Since we recorded in the night, which we done purposely because we wanted to have a variety of lighting in the music video considering the fact that most of the other scene were recored in natural lighting conditions. We needed our audience to be able to see our artist properly, so we used the lighting kit to shine artificial light on them dancing, that way the audience is fully concentrating on the artist and dancers only rather then the locations, as the lights only shine on them showing the many talents of Jayson Wilde. Having used this equipment in AS meant we were at an advantage of not having any complications expect remembering to take enough batteries and the right gel, which we did | We used this equipment when were recording the dance scene in the alley way. 24: Having used Photoshop from last year I improved massively. This confidence was gained from the session that we attend in school and with the help of my team members. I learnt how manage layers, blur backgrounds and make shadows behind your main image. This can be evidenced on the magazine advert that we created and the digipak. Having said this does not eliminate the compilations that occurred such as using the crop and blur tool and using special effects to make our magazine and digipak creative. | Motion is a software that is used to create and edit motion graphics . This was another software that we used in the construction stage in As, for the same purposes, the making of the title sequence for our music video. This software was one of my main strength from last year. However, I still faced many challenges as this year we wanted our fonts to be 3D. At first we tried to see if collectively we could figure out how to go about getting the 3D font. However we were unable to do this so we watch a clip on Youtube that explained step by step how to get 3D fonts. The 3D font was used for
This was my first time using this software. It's an online comic creator and I used it to answer question 3. I really liked how I was about to use virtual online characters to talk about my work, this make it more enjoyable to read. | Final cut is the software that we used to edit our music video. Once again I was more confident than the way I was in AS, due to the session we had learning the basics of FinalCut. My confident shone when we had to add the special effects and transitions to the music video. This made our was This is industry software that we are using and so it does mean that problems attached. | Mixbook is an online album creator that I used last year to create an album explaining the type of technologies that I used, why I used them and any difficulties I faced . I also used Mixbook to answer the same question this time as well. This is again because I can be really creative in how I present my work, in terms of the editing of fonts and images and it’s very simple to use.
How did technology develop your understanding of media products? From participating on this media course over the last two years, I have seen the importance of technology to the media industry. The ways in which technology can change raw footage into something spectacular and attractive to an audience. In addition to this I have developed an understanding into the skills required in order to produce a media product in terms of technological skills. This is that not everything shall go to plan but technology had advance to certain levels where you are able to make major changes to a product without your audience noticing. For example whiles filming out music video our artist made a few mistakes with his lip singing but we were about to use the final cut software to either slow down his singing to match the song or simply add an effect to the scene to take the audience attention away from his singing. | Summary of impact of technology on product...... Overall technology helped the final outcome of our music video as we added a lot of special effects to help emphasise the superstar lifestyle of our artist Jayson Wilde. In addition to this technology helped with the fitting of scenes in order to add to the authenticity and professionalism of the final product. Also the fact that technology is able to perform may functions at the same time was a major help in whiles part taking this project. As we were able to record and take pictures and upload them on the go.
This is an online poster creator that I used when answering question 3 form my evaluation questions. You are able to add images and video using Glogster and it allows you to be very creative and artist. | Evidence.....
