FC: Ronald Reagan 40th President By: Bryana Wise

Reagan's Goals in Inaugural Speech | "America must win this war. Therefore, I will work, I will save, I will sacrifice, I will endure, I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone." | It is rather to make it work--work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it. | “let us begin an era of national renewal. Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew our faith and our hope”. | How can we love our country and not love our countrymen; and loving them, reach out a hand when they fall, heal them when they're sick, and provide opportunity to make them self-sufficient so they will be equal in fact and not just in theory?

Accomplishments | Oct. 11 and 12, 1986, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet boss Mikhail Gorbachev agree to the elimination of nuclear weapons.

One of Regan's accomplishments was, he put an end to the Soviet Union by befriending Gorbachev, the Soviet Union leader. He also convinced and challenged Gorbachev publicly to tear down the Berlin wall. "Tear down this wall" is a famous quote by President Ronald Reagan. | Reaganomics stopped rampant inflation and unemployment during the Carter administration. Reagan's tax cuts helped businesses thrive, causing many people to move up in society's ladder.

Failures | The economy itself was moving closer into a recession. Through the 1980s tax cuts helped the rich and social welfare hurt the poor.

Reagan's "Trickle Down Theory", hurt the economy as well, by tax cuts going to people with the highest income. thinking that tax cuts would go from rich to poor, in result the rich had gotten richer and the poor were deeper into debt. By the end of Reagan's first term the national debt had doubled.

Economic Situation | The federal budget grew even beyond the levels it had reached during the recession of the early 1980s. From $74,000 million in 1980, the federal budget deficit rose to $221,000 million in 1986.

It fell back to $150,000 million in 1987, then started growing again. Economists worried that heavy spending and borrowing by the federal government would cause inflation again.

Reagan's Foreign Policy | The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 seriously affected the Russian economy. Ronald Reagan's foreign policy was believed to have made a negative impact on the economic stability of the Soviet Union. | Strategy of "peace through strength"

Current Event | The current bombing campaign in Libya, intended to take down Gadhafy. In 1986, during Reagan's tenure, the US struck Libya, apparently targeting Gadhafy.

 THE 1980s CULTURALLY

Fun was what the 80s were all about. Popular toys such as, My Little Ponies, and the pop culture of the 80s brought Rubik's Cube and massive hair teasing.

Reagan's foreign policy during this era, was strong and helped the United States during time of war. Ronald Reagan used his ways of foreign policy, "peace through strength", to end the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Although his accomplishments and failures has helped him become a better President for the United Sates through his second term, the economy has struggled and prospered greatly. | BCR

Creating treaties and alliances with other countries and former enemies, put the U.S. in a greater stance for the future. Once coming into his first term as the president, former president Jimmy Carter had left Reagan with many difficulties to make the United States back into the country it use to be.
