34: Call To Worship:: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Statement of Purpose: We are here to celebrate and share in the glorious act that God is about to perform -- the act by which the Holy One converts the love of this woman and this man for each other into the holy and sacred estate of marriage. The words "I love you," first spoken shyly in a time gone by, when it was not known if they would be accepted or returned in kind, are today spoken in the full commitment of yourselves to each other and to an adult responsibility in society. The apostle Paul put it simply: "Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people's sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, to endure whatever comes. Love never comes to an end." Love is a miraculous gift, and a wedding is the celebration of that miracle. Marriage is as old as the human family. It is the highest of life's relationships. It is of the ordaining of the Creator in the very nature of our being as woman and as man. God's loving intention towards us is revealed through this relationship. Ross and Jena, may it be in extreme thoughtfulness and reverence and with dependence upon divine guidance, that you enter now into this holy relationship. Prayer of Invocation: Loving God who is the Soul of the Universe, we are glad to be here today to join in this happy occasion. We give thanks that you have given us the joy of loving each other and the miracle of that special love which two people find with each other. Bless this gathering here today with your spirit of unending love and grace. Be with us, and bless especially Ross and Jena as they make their promises to one another. Strengthen and sustain them always from this day forward. Amen. Prayer of Preparation: O God of Love, you have established marriage for the welfare and happiness of humanity. Yours is the plan, and only with you may we work it out with joy. You have said, "It is not good for the human to be alone. Thus I have made a helpmate." Now our joys are doubled, since the happiness of one is the happiness of the other. Our burdens are halved, since when we share them we divide the load. Bless Ross and Jena that they may have the grace to live the promises they are to make. Defend them from all enemies of their love. Teach them the patience of undeserved forgiveness. Bring them to an old age, rejoicing in love's winter more fully than its springtime. May they never make the mistake of merely living for each other. Teach them that marriage is not living for each other, but it is two people uniting to the purposes of them both. May they not expect that perfection of each other that belongs to you alone. May they minimize each other's weaknesses, be swift to praise and magnify each other's points of strength and see each other through a lover's kind and patient eye. Give them a little something to forgive each day, that they may grow in the grace of long suffering and love. Now make such assignments to them on the scroll of your will as will bless and develop their character as they walk together. Give them enough tears to keep them tender, enough hurts to keep them human, enough failure to keep their hands clenched tightly in yours, and enough of success to make them sure that they walk with you, O God. May they never take each other's love for granted, but always experience that breathless wonder that exclaims, "Out of all this world, you have chosen me!" And when they reach the setting of the sun and life is finished, may their love be burning as bright as it did in the dawn of it. This we ask of you, Christ. Amen. Pledges of Support: Family of the Bride and Groom - Are you willing, now and always, to support and strengthen this union by upholding both Ross and Jena with your love and concern? Answer - We are.
35: Community of Relatives and Friends - We are gathered here in God's presence, yet in the midst of a broken and divided world, to witness the marriage of these two people who stand before you in love, in trust, and in hope. Will you, as relatives and friends, undertake to support them in this special relationship into which they are about to enter? Answer - We will. The Exchange of Vows: I, Ross, take you, Jena, to be my beloved wife, to have you and to hold you, to honor you, to treasure you, to respect you, to encourage you, to be at your side in sorrow and in joy and to love and cherish you always. I promise you this from my heart, with my soul, for all the days of my life, and if God so wills, beyond the walls of life, beyond the bounds of time. I, Jena, take you, Ross, to be my beloved husband, to have you and to hold you, to honor you, to treasure you, to respect you, to encourage you, to be at your side in sorrow and in joy and to love and cherish you always. I promise you this from my heart, with my soul, for all the days of my life, and if God so wills, beyond the walls of life, beyond the bounds of time. The Exchange of Rings: As God is a being who has no beginning and no end and is to be found everywhere, so let the seamless circles of these rings become of the symbol of your love which has no end in space or time. The ring will be placed on your third finger which is said to have a direct vein to your heart. Ross, as you place this ring, symbol of your commitment in marriage on the third finger of Jena's left hand, repeat after me. Jena, I give you this ring as a symbol of my joy in loving you, and as a pledge to honor you with all that I am and all I shall become in our whole life's journey. Jena, as you place this ring, symbol of your commitment in marriage on the third finger of Ross's left hand, repeat after me. Ross, I give you this ring as a symbol of my joy in loving you, and as a pledge to honor you with all that I am and all I shall become in our whole life's journey. As often as either of you see these bright circles, you will be reminded of this high moment and of the unending love you promised. Pronouncement of Marriage: Since you have promised your love to each other, before God and these witnesses, and have exchanged these solemn vows and these symbols of genuine and undying love, as a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I pronounce you husband and wife. "Whom God hath joined together, let no one put asunder." Prayer of Blessing: God who looks on all people with love, we ask your blessing upon this celebration of worship and marriage which has taken place here these past few minutes. We thank you for the lives of Ross and Jena, for the love which they have for each other, and which they have pledged to each other this day. May they be mindful of their past, their heritage, and of the promises for the future. Grant them the patience, understanding, and courage to grow together in love as you would have them do. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen. The Blessing: Now may God's love which the world cannot give and which the world cannot take away be yours today and tomorrow and in all of life's tomorrows. Amen. Ross, your wife. Jena, your husband. Friends, it is my pleasure to present Ross and Jena Burnham. Woo, cake!
