FC: Cancer Clusters
Cancer Clusters | The occurrence of a greater number of cases of a particular disease within a group of people, a geographic area, or a period of time. (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute) | Typically the same type of cancer (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute)
Health | Children and adults have low immune systems that increase the chances of becoming sick. (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute) | Cancer is made up of over one-hundred different types of diseases (Weir)
Geography | Also can leak from industries into streams and rivers (Weir) | Can seep through the ground downhill into our water supply (weir)
How Common? | Over thirteen different states, forty two disease clusters are found and classified in the U.S. (A Procedure for DetectingChildhood Cancer Clusters Near Hazardous Waste Sites in Florida) | One in three Americans will develop some form of cancer, but cancer occurs randomly throughout the states (Weir)
Location | Becoming sick from Asbestos can be the result of working in an old ship yard (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute) | Landfills | Power plants | Hazardous waste sites
Near Industries | Mostly found near or around industries because of improper disposer (Weir)
Through Water | Once the industry secretly disposes of their hazardous waste or gets rid of it improperly it will eventually leak into a nearby river lake or stream and the people of that town can eventually drink it and become sick (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute)
Through Land | From the waste site the waste can seep through the dirt and ground going downhill towards water sources and contaminate our water supply (A Procedure for DetectingChildhood Cancer Clusters Near Hazardous Waste Sites in Florida)
Through Air | Samples from a research center prove that contaminants are cycling through the air (Shelly)
Bills | The bills are extremely high and if you do not have health insurance you will need to either be wealthy or have a great job to pay for the costs (Weir) | The result of this is the excessive number of doctor visits will will have to attend (Weir)
Property Values | The property values may dramatically decrease because people would not want to purchase a house that is in a contaminated area (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute)
Family Impact | Many causes of cancer can be from personal habits like smoking or poor diet (Weir) | It also can be passed down through genes (Cancer Clusters-National Cancer Institute)
Funding | A lot of funding comes from the residents in the area (Environment and Health) | Some support can come from the government but it is hard to prove that a cluster is in that area because there is so little evidence that they are able to gather (Environment and Health) | This is also due to lack of success in the past (Environment and Health)
Efforts To Help | State health departments respond to possible cancer cluster signs or outbreaks (Weir) | A lot of funding comes from the residents in the area (Environment and Health)
Progress | Efforts are very limited due to the lack of success and cases that actually pulled through in the past but now there is a better understanding through new technologies and sciences (Environment and Health)
