FC: The Help Monomyth by Sheriece McGowens
 Skeeter's Story
The Call | Skeeter receives the call when she is sitting at a bridge game with Hilly. Skeeter is not like most people in Jackson, Mississippi because she does not just ignore the wrong that is being done. She even asked Aibileen , 'Do you ever wish you could change things?'(Stockett 12). Hilly starts talking about how "coloreds have diseases therefore need their own bathrooms"(Stockett 10) and Skeeter sees Aibileen just outside of the room. Skeeter realizes what Hilly said was wrong and hurtful. Instead of saying something to Hilly, she goes and tries to apologize to Aibileen in secret: 'Aibileen, that talk in there... Hilly's talk I mean... but that talk in there, about the bathroom...'(Stockett 12).
The Super Natural Aid is the editor Elaine Stein. She told Skeeter: ' I'd hoped, however, you'd choose topics that actually had some punch to them. Keep looking. If you find something original, only then may you write me again' (Stockett 104). This quote alone is the cause that allowed the rest of the journey to happen. | The Super Natural Aid
The Refusal | After reading the Elaine Stein letter, Skeeter gets the idea to write a book about maids. She immediately tries to dismiss it because she is afraid. 'No. I couldn't. That would be ... crossing the line' (Stockett 104).
Crossing the Threshold | Skeeter approached the threshold when she asked Aibileen to help her with the book. At first the threshold is guarded by Aibileen's fear :'Please, will you please at least think about it'...'No ma'am' (Stockett 120). Eventually Aibileen changed her mind 'Law have mercy. I reckon I'm on do it'(Stockett 142). "She changed her mind because of Miss Hilly" (Stockett 143).
Road of Trials | The first problem Skeeter comes across is trying to get Aibileen to get comfortable enough to tell her stories. Finally Aibileen starts writing down her stories. "... Find I can get my point across a lot better writing em down" (Stockett 175). The main trial they have is finding maids who are willing to talk. Fear is what keeps them silent. "'They all got excuses. But really they just scared'" 'I have asked thirty-one maids' (Stockett 187). Minny, alone, proved to be a trial : "She [Minny] say you can't even set on the same side a the room as her. She want to be able to see you square on at all times" (Stockett 190). "She suddenly stands up, throws her bag on her arm. 'I got to go. You giving me the heart palpitations talking about this.' And out she goes, slamming the door behind her." Aibileen says, 'And that was a good mood'(Stockett 193).
The Goddess | The goddess is Constantine, in addition to writing the book, Skeeter focused a lot on trying to find out what happened to her. Constantine was Skeeter's maid. Constantine is the woman who raised her, gave her advice, was her friend. When she suddenly disappears, Skeeter wants to know what happened but nobody tells her and the memories and mysteries of Constantine motivates her to continue. 'I tell myself not to press her.I wish I could hear everything she knows about Constantine, but I'll wait until we've finished her interviews' (Stockett 178).
The Apotheosis | The Apotheosis occurred after Skeeter has her book published and it seems to have caused only bad things to happen. Lou Anne comes and tells her, which is a miracle in itself because no one is talking to Skeeter, that she is grateful for the book and how it has changed her to hear all the nice things written about her and how her maid is the only reason she gets up in the morning. 'We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought' (Stockett 491). After this Skeeter says "But Lou Anne understood the point of the book before she ever read it. The one who was missing the point this time was me" (Stockett 492).
Master of Two Worlds | When Skeeter realizes there is nothing left for her in Jackson, she has mastered both worlds. She no longer cares what her old friends say and she is her own person. So she decides decides to move to New York for a new job opportunity. 'I have nothing left here except Mother and Daddy and staying here for my parents will surely ruin the relationship we have,... I am going to New York' (Stockett 500).
