For Jake | For Jake: a trip down memory lane Love, Mom Christmas 2011
Stop One: Mammoth Caves, KT We almost missed our cave tour because Mom forgot about the time change! | ~ piliated woodpeckers ~ giant albino cave crickets ~ amazing rock formations
Welcome to Florida! | Jake really didn't want to take this picture. . . | On to Florida! Universal: Incredible Hulk; Dragon Challenge; Amazing Spiderman in 3-D; and Doctor Doom's Freefall where we got separated because Mom wouldn't ride it. . . At the NBA Restaurant Jake checked his hand print against M.J.'s.
Kennedy Space Center: Jake had fun feeding the birds by hand and by hat! On the bus tour, a manatee swam by and we saw a HUGE flock of buzzards. ~ RonJon's Surf Shop ~ swimming in the Cocoa Beach ocean ~ eating on the beach to live music
Astronaut Mom | Space Shuttle | Alligators everywhere! | Apollo
Next stop Ft. Lauderdale: ~ a very pushy timeshare tour earned us a channel cruise with an island cookout dinner ~ Jake swam in an even warmer ocean and tried to attract sharks. . .
Enormous boats, beautiful water front mansions, Al Capone's winter home, delicious bar-b-que, mosquitos, and a really hokey show. FUN!!
After getting lost at least twice, we made it to Alligator Alley and the Everglades; we doused ourselves in bug spray (then learned it attracts bugs), and ventured into the wilderness.
the Everglades | It was the dry season and alligators were even in tiny puddles.
Wildlife! Wildlife! Wildlife! This duck was drying his wings out after diving for fish.
There was almost no traffic in Alligator Alley, but (surprise) alligators everywhere! After stopping at a nature center, we took a detour to Everglade City for a boat tour, followed by pizza in a restaurant where we were the only customers (although you'd never know it by the speed of the service. . .)
crunchy little crabs all over the dock
Sanibel Island: ~ "no light" during turtle mating season made for an eerie walk on the beach ~ we were escorted off the island by a prehistoric looking brown pelican who flew alongside A few months after we got home, the island was decimated by a hurricane. | Everglade City
