FC: Censorship In Rap Music
Censorship is the controlling of ideas, words, or images that are not good for society's beliefs.Potter Stewart, associate justice of the supreme court once said "Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself." To me this means that people are allowing censorship to take over the music that is written and could care less as long as it does the society good. Censoring rap music on the radio shouldn't be allowed because it's the artist's original lyrics and it doesn't cause violent activity.
Reason 1- Artists Original Lyrics -Lyrics can show the struggle someones went through growing up and how they were raised. They write it as if they were telling there story to someone who has maybe been through the same lifestyle. (Eby, Lloyd)
Censorship in music is not allowing the artist to show their viewpoint of different things. (Newton, Heather)
Freedom of speech is protected by the US Constitution and its Bill of Rights. (Newton,Heather)
The freedom of expressing yourself and your values have been taken by using censorship. (Newton, Heather)
Kids as young as six to twelve don't understand the real meanings of the lyrics. They listen to the tune of the song more then anything. If they did know what the song meant then that falls back on the parents and how they are being raised. (Eby,Lloyd) | Reason 2- Doesn't cause Violent Activity
Parents look at the violence taken from rap music and believe kids are getting more violent when they listen to these songs, but actually the arrest rate for teenagers went down 27 percent since 1970. | "Violence can be linked with a variety of issues." | (Sternheimer, Karen)
Some causes of violence include the use of guns, poverty and single parent households. | "Frightened parents, politicians, and journalists have unfairly accused the media for corrupting young people." | (Jon,Katz)
Others say "obscene speech is not protected by the first amendment." | People believe rap music is causing bad public behavior. | Opposing Views | The FCC prohibits the profanity on the radio during the hours of 6 am to 10 pm because thats is when children are most likely to listen to the radio. | (Newton, Heather)
Conclusion | To some up my opinion's on censorship i feel that it is a violation of freedom of speech to censor someones writings or opinions. Even though certain music or writing is not for everyone it is a persons right to choose what they listen to or read. Age and parental consent plays a major factor in what minors should be allowed to listen to. I do feel some teenagers make poor decisions but I would not blame it on musical lyrics.
